Amatuer question about surround speakers...

963 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Easyaspie
Please bare with me. When placing a surround speaker, should you place it to the same side of the room as the front speaker? What I mean is, if a surround speaker is labeled LEFT, should you indeed wire it left and place it on the same side of the room as the front left? Wouldnt this reverese the audio coming out of my surrounds compared to my fronts? Hopefully I asked this question cleary enough. Thanks!

Yes your left surround speaker should be on the same side as you left front speaker. I.e. if sitting down in the sofa and you are facing forward, all left speaker should be on your left side.

I've no idea what you mean about reversing the audio, so I'll simply say forget that notion.
depending on the markings of the receiver, Left could mean the left front speaker and left side or left rear as the surrounds. Check your manual for proper speaker hookup to the receiver. And this layout from Dolby Labs will help with speaker positioning.

"if a surround speaker is labeled LEFT".....Is your surround speaker actually "labeled" LEFT?

If they are di-poles, they should indeed be labeled left and right. With bi-poles or direct radiators it obviously wouldn't matter.

Most companies label dipoles as "left" or "right," including my company. A "left" dipole will have it's front array in phase with the left front speaker, and out of phase with it's rear array. Most people in most rooms couldn't tell the difference, but the more things you get correct in your hookup, the better the results will be. Easyaspie is correctamundo...
What about Dipoles as main speakers...will they also be labled left and right?...or does this just apply to surrounds?

No-one would use "dipoles" (the current variety) as main speakers, would they??!

I know that and that's why I specified of the "current variety".

My Fostex GZ1001 speakers are also partially "dipoles" but that is an entirely different animal!

Funny you should say that. I was at my Paradigm dealer a while back and asked him a somewhat baited question: "How come your ADP surrounds aren't labeled as L & R?"

He said it didn't matter, after I told him that it did and why, he shook his head and said "I never thought of that".

I then told him that neither had I until the subject came up on a thread on AVS.
