News flowing around a new Amazon's Set Top Box may be release as early as next month.

A new report from Recode says that Amazon's set-top box venture is not dead and that we could see the device released as early as next month. The device is set to compete directly with Apple TV and the Roku and will be Android-based. The device will most likely run Amazon's custom app market place and will feature Amazon prime streaming functionality along side a few other non-competitor streaming applications.

Some earlier reports suggest that the box will also feature Ouya-like gaming but nothing from the Recode report suggest as much, and with the issues plaguing Android-gaming devices I am willing to bet Amazon is steering clear of anything other than simple gaming. With Amazon's set-top box releasing soon, questions about why a Amazon Prime app for Google Chrome may have been answered as no one would buy a >$50 set top box when they can buy the $35 Chromecast.

I know they will be milking there Amazon Instant service but in order for this box to even be consider it must have the usual competitors like Netflix, Hulu Plus & You Tube otherwise who will buy it just for Amazon Instant.

I will buy it just for Amazon streaming if the price is right. $40 or less and I will get it just for Amazon.

Unfortunately no one or two boxes does everything or does everything well. So I've always figured I'll need several devices to get the best apps available.

Hi aaronwt, would be nice if they offer a discount for prime members. Even better if it can stream live contents.

Amazon devices only use the free Android SDK and not the fee licensed (per unit) Google API (which includes Google Play Services hence Chromecast). Amazon is also very tight about what they are developing. I couldn't get anything out of them their booth at a developer's conference before the first Kindle Fire released even though I had an Android title on their app store.
