amount of backlit poster light

 My lightbox probably wouldn't provide sufficient light to illuminate a stairway... the ambient light would be equivalent to a dim nightlight.


Maybe if you got one with external lights too (like curtisg's), instead of just the light behind the poster.

If you get one with the florescent light in it, it should.

I am using a 48-foot strand of rope in mine. It is pretty bright, but not enough to replace a ceiling mounted light. It would be enough to see to walk with but not to read...even big print.

My lightbox has 3 florescent fixtures in it. I wouldn't rely on it as an adequate source of light in an important area like part of a staircase.


But, for the best effect, you'll want to be able to run the lightbox without an overhead light being on...

well... I guess that settles it. Thanks for the input folks.

I was wondering about the same thing-- I've just completed the basic construction of my theater and the entrance is on a landing at the top of the stairs. This area used to receive light from the room now closed with a wall. I was thinking about making a movie box to get some light there-- doesn't need a lot as there is light from the room below. Might be possible to add a light to the bottom of the box shining to the floor to give the needed lighting? Just another thought.

The extra light at the bottom edge of a lightbox sounds like a great idea - I'm sorry I didn't think of that one myself! Sounds like a perfect application for a slim-tube florescent fixture (like an under-cabinet light).
