Amp assistance

Greetings,

I am pleased with the sound quality that my Denon receiver provides for my 5.2 setup, but I want to have more power on tap from an amp. I have an opportunity to purchase a Rotel RMB-1095, but have read mixed reviews on the sound quality from them. I have also tossed around getting a Monolith 5 or 7, or a Emotiva XPA. Should I save the money and get one of the newer amps listed or go with the Rotel. I have never listened to any of these amps.

Thanks,

Rich

@RichB I assume your denon has preouts? Depending on your speakers and how loud you like to listen, it will take a ton more power to produce a little more volume, if memory serves?

I don't own one but hear that monolith amps are the best bang for the buck nowadays.

The Monoprice monolith amps are made by ATI in America and have gotten really good consumer and professional reviews. I do believe they offer the best bang for your buck.

Okay, thanks. So I take it nobody has any experience with the Rotel amp that I mentioned?

most pick an amp that work best for their speakers. rotel is used alot by music lovers and bw speakers. what speakers you have and how loud do listen? can you hit reference levels now? 105db with peaks to 115db...

I've owned my Rotel RMB-1095 for a long time. I never had a single issue with it and it sounds fantastic and has no problem powering my system over the years no matter what speakers I've had. I bought mine back in December of 2000 so its coming up on 19 yrs old. Is it rock solid and dead reliable? oh yeah. All these years and the darn thing is still going strong and sounding great. Mine originally had the all black face plate but years ago I ordered the silver center face plate and did the surgery on it and replaced the black face plate with the silver and black. Great amp.

If I was looking at a new Monolith 200x5 or a used Rotel RMB-1095 the price of the Rotel would play a major part in my decision. Both amps are 200x5, two torodial transformers, XLR etc... The Monolith is $1300 new so the price and age of the Rotel would make my decision for me.

How old is the Rotel and how much is it?

Did the amp change the tone or the sound the receiver originally produced?

No idea on the age... They are currently asking $800 OBO for the amp.

Man that's a tough question because it was 19 years ago and the receiver was a Denon AVR3300 ($999 MSRP). Back then I was so young and so new to this hobby/obsession and I had read so many reviews about the amp that when I got it I could swear everything changed. Back then "to me" the soundstage, imaging, highs, lows etc... just everything was better with the amp.

Now to be honest I was young and I played that Denon really loud and at those volumes the Denon's amps couldn't take it so the soundstage collapsed and the highs and lows were lousy too at those loud volumes. So after adding the Rotel I could play at those same levels for movies and music and still have a huge soundstage with crisp, clear highs and great bass. At low levels I'd say the Rotel and Denon sounded the same but the difference came when I really pushed the system.

Over the years I've had the Rotel paired with pre/pros and receives from Rotel, Marantz, Sherwood Newcastle, Denon, Pioneer, Yamaha and now Anthem. I've never compared it to the amps in any other receiver over the years(except the Denon back then) because once you get it you never use the amps in any receiver again. I can say this though. I've replaced every single piece of equipment in my system several times (TV, projectors, screens, subs, receivers, pro/pros, etc...), but the RMB-1095 and two Rotel RB-1050 amps are the only pieces that are still there after all these years.

I'm not saying get the Rotel I'm just saying amps last a long time so no matter which amp you get it's a good investment and will out live pretty much anything else you buy.

These statements are very true and accurate. If I were spending that kind of money I would buy new because I will get a warranty.

That Rotel amp could be 20 years old. Probably still sounds great but for how much longer?

Buying a 3-5 year old amp is one thing for
reliability.

Buying a 20 year old amp is an entirely different animal. It would have to be under $1k less than a comparable new amp with warranty for me to even consider a 20 year old amp. Just my opinion.
