I need an amp to drive a passive subwoofer and was wondering if I need a subwoofer specific amp ?
A lot of amps in my price and power range only state specs at 20hz-20khz. Since my sub will go down closer to 12hz will this matter ?

What is the make/model/size of the passive sub?
What is the price and power range?

Its a DIY job in the planning stage so I just need to know if I need to look for amps with specs rated at lower than 20hz to drive a sub down to 12hz or not.

Ask in the DIY speakers section. Many have measured their amps to find the LF rolloff. As it's a simple DC blocking series cap, it's an easy and cheap mod, that is, if it's not implemented in the DSP software.

I found this on the amp specs of an amp I am interested in and if I understand correctly it puts out 50% power at 3hz so I guess it will be still putting out reasonable power at 12hz and should be a suitable candidate ?

Power Bandwidth: 3Hz to 50kHz, +0/-3dBFrequency Response: 20Hz to 20kHz, +0/-0.1dB at 1 watt, 8ohms
