An article on listening

The above is, IMO, a very interesting article from the Boston Audio Society archives. The link was posted in a recent RAHE newgroup message.

What I find particular interesting is the comment that lighting affects the sound perception. According to the presenter, in a darkened room, with the only lighting on the speakers, the sound is perceived to be more "vivid". I definitely have the same experience. Many people have said that high-end components sound better, and I wonder if it is related to the fact that the listening rooms in a high-end store have much better controlled (suitably dim) lighting. That and much better room treatment, of course.

The article also explains ABX, and presents a trial where the subjects can't tell between an LP original and the same played through a digital processing loop.

Most people would agree that sight afffects mood, which affects the senses. My car seems to run better when it's clean. I read the article. I tend to think that accurate ABX tests are extremely difficult to do and the author addresses these concerns. Let's all dim the lights, smoke a "cigar" or drink a glass of wine, and enjoy...
Very interesting article, I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for posting the link.
My system sounds best after my 10th pint of Guinness!
I thought the comments on lighting were interesting, too.

I would be interested in more detailed results of this test:

The results on the two trials were 9/15 and 7/15; the total was 16/30, 53% correct.

Did the same people get it correct on both trials?

It also sounds like the "group" format of the ABX test was far from ideal:

Even the temperate Poh Ser Hsu was heard to snap at someone two rows ahead of him to quit moving his head around!

Other than that, I think it was a good demonstration of how ABX testing works.

A gallon of Guinness can do more than make something sound good ...
God, she hot! And, she wants me!
So, how do I get my hearing tested and how much is it going to cost me? I figure if I my display and audio need calibration then maybe I do, too!
