Last night we were watching "An American Rhapsody" on HDNet Movies. It's about a family that escapes Hungary in the 40s to flee to the US, but they have to leave their young daughter behind. Years later, when they are able to bring their daughter to the US (no, it's not really a spoiler, as the guide even says the movie is about them being reunited), there is a portion showing them driving her home from the airport. This is probably some time around 1950, and when they get to their neighborhood, she's looking out the window of the car and sees a family playing in the front yard of their house. And on the chimney of that house, plain as day, is a DirecTV dish. Maybe they were beta-testers? ;)

Hmmm, or should this be in the Satellite Hardware forum?

That's hysterical, Darin.

My wife is an expert at picking out stuff like that. We'll be watching some wild west movie and she'll point out TV antennas, jet contrails and (thanks to HDTV) treaded tire tracks. My favorite is telephones. If I see one more telephone with modular cords in a 40's and 50's setting, I'm going to scream.

We watch movies twice. The second time is after we've gone to imdb.com's goofs page.

Probably should be in the movie content forum as it's more of a movie blooper than an HD blooper, unless the blooper would have less impact and be less noticeable if the movie was watched in SD.

That's just it.. you see SO much more with HDTV. Wounds that appear to be stick-ons.. scars that move.. obvious lipstick ..on MEN. And it's not all on movies.

There's a movie content forum? Who'da knew? And it was only a standard round dish, so that happy 50's family at least wasn't getting HD. So I guess the only HD related issue here is that the movie was in HD, on HDNM.

DrDon, I probably mostly get in to the program I'm watching, and don't always notice that stuff (though this one really jumped out at me). I do remember watching Carnivale last year, I think the episode where they went to Babylon, and I'd SWEAR one of the buildings had a relatively modern air conditioning unit on the roof. Of course, I didn't have an HD-TiVo back then, so I couldn't go back and see if I saw what I thought I saw.

On-topic ..one of my favorites from two seasons ago was on a "CSI" epsode where they didn't bother doing the matte work in the 16 X 9 area. You could "see" outside of the airplane windows in the 4X3 area, but the windows in the 16 X 9 area were still blue screen.

And who hasn't seen a sideline or pit reporter give a wrap-up cue to his interview subject? Either in the reflection from the subject's sunglasses or becaue their finger is still in the 16 X 9 frame. We have an entire drinking game that centers around Bonnie Bernstein's nose, which never seems to leave the 16 X 9 shot.

In the Movie No Way Out with Kevin Costner, he is being chased around Georgetown in Washington DC. He then runs into the Georgetown Metro (subway) station (Which does not exist in real life, but they made convincing signs for it). Once in the station, he proceeds to escape his pursuers by jumping on a Baltimore Subway Car and speeding off. Baltimore's subway supposedly closes earlier and allows more time for the film crews to work.

I think they had 1990's-vintage Shure mikes on "American Dreams" this week.

Just be glad you don't work in TV...I'm always mentally referring back to old RCA Broadcast Equipment catalogs in my head, trying to recall what model of camera, microphone, or tape machine would have been more appropriate in a particular show.

Having grown up in the era of RCA BK 77DX microphones,

one of the best VO mikes ever built,

and TK 30 cameras

I enjoy looking for bloopers in vintage broadcast equipment that I have played with at one time or another, (post '50's).

You would be suprised at what was around local stations in the '60s and '70s that I worked for.

Ken, here is a blurb on the production mikes used in some of American Dreams scenes.

I saw on a somewhat recent episode of The Drew Carey Show, one of the other actors just sitting in a chair outside the 4x3 area while Drew and his girlfriend were supposed to be by themselves in a bedroom.

I saw an obviously fake mustache on a guy recently... on Cold Case, I think. It wouldn't have been obvious in SD.

Yeah, there was a show a couple years back (can't remember which one, West Wing maybe?) which showed a flashback scene to a few years earlier, and the guy was talking on a Verizon pay phone… Verizon didn't exist back then, they still would've been Bell Atlantic. *snicker* Or GTE, or something, I think it was set on the East coast…

I saw a movie once where these two NYC white cops go into the black bars and roust all the miscreants there, making them dump all their drugs out of their pockets. And then there's this great car-subway chase full of bloopers, and then...

I enjoy seeing just how flawed beautiful stars' faces are-- pimples, scars, pockmarks, wrinkles. The crown goes to a ruddy acne-scarred David Caruso, complete with bad make-up tan.
