Looking for an analog 36" 4:3 CRT. Any suggestions?

Almost bought a HD Toshiba 36HF73.. nice picture with a HD source. But I will be using it with standard def. satellite, and the occasional DVD. The Toshiba upconverts the compressed 480i signal and I don't like the result. I'm not sure that I would get used to the motion artifacts. So.. I'm now looking at analog sets. Hoping to keep it around $1,000, but will spend more if necessary. Will be looking at the Toshiba 36AF53 and ...?

No!! Don't buy an analog set. It's time to get HD man! At least get a set with an integrated tuner so you could at least plug in an antenna.

Analog sets should be ordered to cease production for all I'm concerned

Spent a week in front of a HD set and was not impressed. Sure, the picture is very good. But where are the channels? 250 SD channels and only ten HD. All of my favorite channels are SD. With this in mind HD is nothing more than a novelty to me. I'm not going to get excited about HD when there isn't anything to watch! If it takes an analog set to get a good picture for the 250 channels that are available - then analog it is! I'll look at HD when most of the channels I watch are actually broadcasting in HD. If you have more HD channels or your favorites are already HD, then I am very envious.

I think Sony offers the best compromise on ther new -955 (and possibly -960) sets: 480i content arriving via the NTSC tuner or the composite video inputs is not routed through the digital processing (DRC) circuitry at all according to what I have read. Result is 480i pictures without those artifacts you describe. Meanwhile, other content is processed digitally as appropriate. As always, see for yourself but when I evaluated the KD-36XS955 I liked the SD picture that came right off the cable feed in the store. This little bit of info about the lack of digital signal processing is not well known but is covered in depth in a lengthy thread at the ***************.com site and may have been covered here as well, but I have not found it here.

Sounds like you are hip to this, but the satelite services compress their content to varying degrees and the compression itself causes artifacts in some cases.
