I've been using AverTV PCI-E with VirtualDub with some success. I've run into issues with audio synchronization and audio compression. For some strange reason I can compress to xvid in realtime, but it won't let me compress the audio.

Anyone know how I can fix this? I tried downloading Lame mp3 for virtualdub, but not having any luck, audio sync issues galore.

Also was considering Black Magic Intensity for the task. Has anyone tried that solution? I'm only trying to capture SD material, but the degradation I see in AverTV PCI-E is less than ideal.

I personnaly use a couple of Viewcast Osprey-210. Nice little card. I can capture 720x480 with PCM 192/48 with only 12% cpu used. This board capture audio and video in uncompress avi without any sync problem. You can use Huffyuv with virtualdub to compress realtime losslessly by a ratio of 3:1. With a 1Tb drive I can capture 35 hours like that. I then compress them to mp4 with Nero Recode 3 with a bitrate of 2.59mb/s with AAC audio.

The card doesn't have a tuner but since I use it with my sat box it is not a problem.

It goes for about $200US.

How is the video quality, is it very clean? A bit high for an analog capture card.

Cool, how about realtime compression? Have you tried that out? I'm too lazy to do the extra legwork.

Video quality is excellent. A perfect match to the source by my eyes. And Huffyuv does a great job. I use it all the time, capturing from Turner Classic Movies and other channels.

The fact that it capture uncompressed (or losslessly with Huffyuv) means that I can cut ads precisely (to the single frame) and postprocess the file without anomaly.

I use it in combination with VirtualDVR to schedule my recordings which in turn calls Virtualdub for the capture.

If you understand french you can go to my site (see the sig) for a tutorial on how to config, capture and encodes with the Osprey-210 and VirtualDVR/Virtualdub.
