Hey guys I have a fundemental misunderstanding of what is being done with an anamorphic lens. No matter what type of projection display we have (16:9 or CRT), the DVD player is going to send it the same thing, right...a vertically stretched 4:3 image? How the 16:9 projector gets it to a screen, either electronically or optically, is where I struggle.

Does anyone have a link to a good graphic? The Panamorph site shows a full 16:9 image that is stretched (no bars) for a 2.35 movie which is then corrected by their lens. That is not what we have, right? That would be full resolution for 2.35. It would be nice, but .... Our choice about how to get to correct geometry and AR is either electronically via "Full" mode in the projectors scaler, or via the anamorphic lens. Is it as simple as superior optics over superior electroncs...or what?

Thank heavens it's easier to make anamorphic movies!

As I understand it, you can buy a DVD player that will make the stretch from 2.35:1 to 16:9, and then the anamorphic lens takes it back to 2.35 so that ALL pixels are used in the active area of the image and NONE are used in the "black" bars. Hence the black bars really are black and the image is higher resolution.

I think you can also do this stretch with an HTPC.

Cam Man, that is correct. You'd need either a scaler or a projector that supports vertical zoom so that the 2.35:1 AR image on 16:9 source stretches vertically eliminating the black bars on 2.35:1 AR.

I posted some pics here. I don't knew whether these are the pics you are interested.

Joaquin,

Thanks for the terrific images. Alan actually just turned me toward the Prismasonc site which has excellent graphics and explanation. The scaler at that stage to stretch vertically was the missing link for me.

What projector, scaler, and anamorphic lens are you now using?

I know this is heresy, but will your scaler "intelligently" expand the 1.78 image to fill the 2.35 screen with minimal geometric distortion in the central portion of the image?

How is brightness effected by doing this? Would one get the same lumens when viewing a 2:35 aspect ratio vs a 1:78 one?

How easy is it to switch between aspect ratios, lets say your looking at a 1:78 DVD menu, and decided to play the 2:35 movie at this time. Does one have to then adjust the source, lense or both?

Having an external lense between the PJ and the screen is a tricky task to do, does not a slight shift in either one create a distortion in the projected image?

Do all DLP projectors lend themselves to this anamorphic lense?

Interesting topic, but lots of questions here.
