Anamorphic stretch with Handbrake?

4267 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Steve Scherrer
Has anyone used Handbrake to do the vertical stretch (i.e., remove the letterboxing) required to use an anamorphic lens for 2.35:1 viewing?

I'm thinking of purchasing one of the newer lower cost 1080p projectors (Epson UB possibly), but none except the Panasonic do the anamorphic conversion, and I'm not budgeting for a scaler, too. I might use a Mac mini as an HTPC, so I thought if I just convert the DVD to an anamorphically stretched image file, I could just feed that to the PJ, sort of "pre-stretched" without the need for a separate "on-the-fly" scaler. Any thoughts?

It's possible, and it would work, but it seems like a lot of work and doesn't help you with rented discs or HD DVD/Blu-ray.

I think you're better off going it a projector that has the stretch capabiliites.

Also, on Windows at least there are great programs (Theatertek) that will do such scaling on the fly for you.
All I need is the VS too. Is there any cheap scaler/processor that can accomplish this?

Yeah, I had thought of the rental issue. I've actually been faithful to the "don't copy rented DVD's" dogma that I've tried to instill in my teenage son! (Although MacTheRipper would make it soooo easy!)

I may just go with the Panny AX200 as this is my first PJ and use the money I save on the Anamorphic lens instead (maybe Aussiemorphic III), then plan to upgrade to 1080p when the price is even lower in a few years.

Maybe a question for the Mac HTPC section, but are there any scaling programs for Mac? I seem to remember DisplayConfigX as a possibilityany others?

Thanks!

Yeah, actually I kind of took that for granted, for a long time I ran everything via SageTV Client on my HTPC, but then Sage released the HD Extender and I've essentially decommissioned my HTPC. Since then, I've realized I became spoiled with the nice aspect ratio controls of the HTPC and the ease with which it handled all that. My Pioneer Elite DVD player is a big step down in that regard. Fortunately my IN76 does the AR control I need.

You don't mention your price range, but from the projectors you've mentioned, there's some others you might want to consider:

BenQ W10000 (just be careful who you buy it from)

BenQ W5000

Anything from InFocus

Really can't help you much there, I've no idea about Mac software.

Harry: Funny! Yesterday, I just had that talk with my FIVE YEAR OLD SON!

I bought a media server to store all of my store-bought DVDs in my collection. We rented "Underdog" over the weekend (terrible movie, but my son thought it was one of the best movies he had ever seen!) and wanted me to rip it to the server. I told him he would have to put it on his birthday list and own a copy before we could put it on a server...

Not that I am all that altruistic--Until I had that conversation with him, I was considering doing that with movies I wanted to see. Nothing like the purity of kids to keep you on the straight and narrow.

(I know, technically, ripping DVDs at all to get around copy protection is against the law, but like CDs, I take the position that a copy for my own personal use is morally ok...)

Sorry, back on topic...
