Couldn't the SA8300, as it only outputs 1080i, benefit from some processing if fed through component cables? The effect may be negligible but at least you could say it was upscaled to 1080p. Either way, the difference won't be "huge."

His display scales ALL inputs to it's native resolution. That would include de-interlacing 1080i.

Virtually all displays do that. The real question would be whether it does it well (although it's probably irrelevant for the conversion from 1080i to 1080p, which is all that matters in the OP's case).

I know my PS3 upscales DVDs much better than my Samsung LCD, so the fact that someone's TV does upscaling doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from a receiver with good video processing.

Is there a big difference between them- enough to alter avr purchase say from denon 2310 to onkyo 807 etc. Would be using with ps3/sa8300hd cable box panny58v10????

With all HD sources, the video upscaling ability in those AVRs will be moot.

With SD sources, in order of ability it would go Faroudja (onkyo 807), ABT (Denon 2310), and REON. The ABT would be slightly better then the Faroudja as the ABT 2010 chip is not fully implemented as in the DVDO Edge. The REON will reportedly blow both of them out of the water, although typically only found on upper level AVRs.

I'm pretty sure the ABT-2010 as implemented in the Yamaha RX-Z7 actually tests better than most (maybe all) Reon chips. That said, the tests that Reons fail aren't generally important and the Reons may have other advantages that don't show up in a standard video test suite.

I have yet to see any video processing make a large difference. A bad deinterlacer is probably the worst case scenario. If you think that's your problem, I suggest a DVD player with a competent deinterlacer.

I have seen a bad scaler in operation though. My Tivos zoom mode is noticeably worse than my TVs.
