Anchorman DVD - Aspect Ratio problem?

1402 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mayhem66
I've just got Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy. The case and DVD say widescreen anamorphic 1.85:1, but when I play it, it shows up as Full Screen. Am I losing my mind here? I expect a black bar top and bottom. Could there be some wierd aspect conversion going on? I've got a Toshiba HDTV. I've thrown in a couple of other 1.85:1 movies in, and they all have the aspect ratio I expect.

Has anybody else heard of this problem with this DVD? I can seem to find any forum notes here, and nothing comes up on a websearch.

Stone,

I wonder if the other 1.85 movies you have are non-anamorphic. If you have a 16x9 Widescreen HDTV then you normally will not see black bars. Then again this could be an overscan issue but the bars would not be that noticable.
1.85 will fit most HDTVs (1.78) due to slight overscan with no black bars. You either have a mislabeled dvd or the dvd player/tv is setup incorrectly.
I think its an anamorphic thing. Unfortunately the first DVD I popped in was The Full Monty (Widescreen format... but not anamorphic or "enhanced for widescreen").

I just tried Sin City, and this looks the same as Anchorman, but I know this disc is truely anamorphic 1.85:1

I'm actually a little embarrassed here. I've had this Toshiba HDTV for a year, and just now I find the menu item that converts the aspect ratio. I've been plugging in the DVDs and selecting the conversion that "looked best"

...... and I have the gall to call myself a nerd. :)

Thanks for the quick replies!

This DVD is indeed mislabeled. I bought mine at Costco just before Christmas, just opened it tonight, popped in the DVD (both the keepcase and DVD are listed as anamorphic 1.85) and had the extreme displeasure of watching this movie in full screen mode.

Anybody know of a phone number for Dreamworks? I don't have the receipt anymore, so I guess I'm going to ask Dreamworks for the correct disk.
