I have just mounted my optoma h31 and I needed to use a pretty serious angle within the mount to get the picture square. Have I just in essence keystoned my picture without using the keystone feature?

I don't think I am since I am not forcing the picture into a different shape other that the rectangle it is intended to be after being hung from a ceiling that, admitedly, may not be perfect. Am I correct, or just deluding myself?

Are you sure the keystone feature has been set to zero?

If the projector is level, the picture should be rectangular. You may need an inverse pedestal coming down from the ceiling to get the projector suspended in air at the needed height so the projector sits level. Usually the projector lens is at the level of the top edge of the screen for ceiling mounting, for some projectors the projector must be mounted upside down for this.

Some projectors' bodies are shaped in a way that they look tilted when the lens is leveled correctly.
