Cowboy Bebop was a commercial success both in Japan and worldwide, especially the United States. It was later expanded into a motion picture, two manga series, and video games. Sony Pictures released the Cowboy Bebop movie, Knockin' on Heaven's Door to theaters worldwide, and followed up with an international DVD release. Two Cowboy Bebop manga series were created based on the anime; as well as two video games, one for each the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles.

Cowboy Bebop is strongly influenced by American culture, especially the jazz movements of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s and the early rock era of the 1950s, 1960's and 1970's. Nearly all of its action sequences, from space battles to hand-to-hand martial arts combat, are set and timed to music. Music is a driving force within the series. Episodes are called Sessions (in reference to musicians playing a "jam session"), and titles are either borrowed from an album's or a song's name (Sympathy for the Devil), or make use of a genre name (Mushroom Samba), that will influence the whole episode's action and musical theme.

Cowboy Bebop is considered to be one of the most successful animes to come to America, and has a massive fan following.

After reading Sony's involvement in the series, I was somewhat surprised to see that the show has landed on the HD-DVD promotions list:

Honestly, I am very tempted to see what animation of the 2d, cel-based variety looks like in HD, so I am eagerly anticipating this release. Discussions on cowboy bebop, or just anime in general, could work. What would you like to see come to HD through this recent announcement from Bandai?

We'll if you're very tempted to see what cel-based animation looks like in HD, you don't have to wait for what is an unannounced title. Brave Story is available right now for importation from Japan, and I can say that it looks great.

Also, if you browse through the first page or two of this forum you'll come across Bandai's official announcement of the 4 titles they're preparing for a summer release. Here's the press release to save you some time:

Honestly, I doubt I'll rebuy my series because they are in HD. Actually, that isn't true, I'll rebuy certain series like Gundam Wing and Escaflowne. I just bought the Cowboy Bebop Remix DVDs, so I'm in no rush to rebuy it again. Gankutsuou is my favorite anime series, but I doubt it can get anymore high def than it already is.

Dragonball is owned by Funimation, who is currently remastering the series creating 16:9 masters at the same time.

Bebop rules. I can't wait! Sony released the movie, Bandai the series; which could mean the series is on HD DVD and the movie is on Blu Ray... ugh.
