DirecTV released a press release saying that one of their satellites had a control processor failure and they will be moving its traffic to other satellites.

The command control processor (responsible for satellite attitude control among other things) pooped late last week. DirecTV-3 is now on the backup CCP. The backup CCP is designed as a redundant system capable of operating the command control functions for the entire service life of the satellite. While DirecTV did not have to shift programming from DirecTV-3, they elected to take a precautionary decision and will maintain DirecTV-3 as a backup system. Somewhat reminiscent of the "failing" communications command processing module in 2001: A Space Odyssey, eh, Hal? Hal? Are you there, Hal? Hal?
