A friend who's in the biz "under NDA" mentioned in a few months

Apple will be announcing a new FP. He said the launch is part of their 20th anniversary and they are launching a new product line and will get aggressive entering the market.

He saw a demonstration of this projector and said it was one of the best hes seen, he was really blown away. He would not go into detail on what technology they were using. He sells a lot of 3 chips so he knows what a good picture looks like.

Not knowing what he saw (it could of been a LCD projector for all I know) its interesting we have another big player about to enter the market.

Along with Epson and others the competition among manufactures is really getting fierce but for the end user this all adds up to more choice and better pricing.

Anyone have any inside info on what they were demonstrating?

EDIT:

O.k. Apple sounds a lot better than Microsoft, but I think it is going to be more expensive. It is also probably have Apple style connectors on it making adapters necessary.

However this one area where the "apple look" doesn't really matter. When the lights are out and the projector is on the ceiling, paying extra for a fancy case design.

The neat thing I guess is that likely there will be some integration features that Japanese never seem to get quite right. Some sort of new "MoviePod" that hooks up to it. (Yes, I'm making that up.)

Regardless, competition is good news. Let's hope the Apple name doesn't cost us too much.

I havn't heard this, but the competition is good.

The computer guys have done more for moving the ball forward than the other standard entertainment manufacturers.

It's probably a 1080p LCOS with 2000:1 for $3000. Unfortunately It probably will crash every hour.

Cool!

Then although it will be more expensive, it will actually work!

I'll bet someone is OEMing the light engines to these computer guys. The first person to spill the beans gets a reward :D

Thankfully apple quit using proprietary connections a long time ago.

so if they make different models will we be comparing apples to apples? If the PJs are that good I hope Apple gets a bigger share of the market than what they do in the PC world. Wouldn't be funny if you could only upgrade the firmware with an IBM based PC and not a MAC.

If I had to guess, I would guess that Apple is 'licensing' the use of their name and logo so that some other manufacturer can build Apple branded pjs.

That way Apple makes money without risk (except to their reputation if the pjs suck).

If Apple is actually going to build pjs, there must be even more margin in pjs than we realize.

Considering how often some people refer to companies in the business as thieves, there must be :)

IF apple prices it competitively it will be fine but Im fully expecting for people to have to pay a premium for the apple brand like everything else they make, they dont know the meaning of competitive pricing.

Next thing you know, people will be watching porn on Wang projectors.

That was what I was referring to. Not a big deal, but some sort of adapter will be needed for DVI

Doesn't ADC bundle USB in with DVI? If so, might be worth it if they think of some usefull accessory o hook into USB. Maybe a little camera so your PJ can watch you.

On the bright side, it would mean I could finally turn my old G3 tower into an HTPC.

They'll most likely partner up with a pj manufacturer and put all sorts of proprietary computer friendly aspects on board. The most likely next move would be to show ads of people showing their home i-movies on a big screen. I mentioned in a previous post that the first manufacturer to put a national ad out for an affordable pj will clean up. I can see it now, plasma, yes we love plasma, but home theater?? We love our i-pj.
