Another cracked Samsung PN58C6400 screen

So we're on our second Samsung PN58C6400 plasma tv in 3 weeks....the first one I took home in my truck, the salesman laid it down in my truck bed...he said "sure you can lay these things down"....I drove careful, got it home and it was cracked from one end to the other....so there's no problem with a replacement..... today, the same shop delivers another Samsung PN58C6400 tv...it's standing upright...we get it out of the box, things look good, no cracks....we take the stand off and hang it on wall mount....the effing screen is cracked again....we lifted it evenly, no bumps, bangs, etc. Of course, no money has changed hands yet so that's fine....what is up with being 2 for 2 with cracked plasma screens? Is it the ultra thin models that are prone to this? What worries me now is if I do go and reorder this model, and we DO happen to get it mounted on the wall, the thing could crack at anytime and we're out $$$$....any thoughts??

Sounds like bad luck to me. The ultra thin sets should be delivered up right on a pallet. As far as the set cracking once you have it on the wall, I don't see that happening unless it gets hit with something. I hope the next one is better.
Yea I would keep trying unfortunately this happens and it does not mean the store or the rep did it, it could come from factory, delivery to the store etc.
But it could mean the store does not handle the sets with care in recieving. If I was 0 for 2, I would buy from a competing store.

You cannot know for sure if it was done by the store, but, again, I rarely have the patience for that sort of thing, and having it happen twice would make me more to a competing store.
Good point. Unless the manager makes it right somehow
The ultra thins are far more delicate than the standard sets.
Thanks for the responses.....I think we'll try ordering it again tomorrow; I'm going to tell the store I'm buying from this is the last chance or we're going somewhere else....they really should raise h*ll with their shipper about this, even Samsung Canada...whatever that'll do.....

Did you not pop the top off the box and inspect the screen for cracks before loading it onto your truck? It could have already been cracked, but it's more likely that it cracked while you were improperly transporting it laying flat - which is strictly warned against on every plasma box i've ever seen. In all phases of a plasma TV's travels from factory to train yard to port to distribution hub to store to home, they are ALWAYS kept upright. The foam packing inside the box is only designed to take a shock while it's standing upright - it does not adequately support the TV when laying down. All it takes is one bounce or dip or railroad track to bounce the TV an inch or two off the truck bed and cause it to crack when it comes back down.

It sounds like you guys somehow cracked the screen while handling the TV during the wall mounting process since it wasn't cracked when you took it out of the box. All it takes is one slight twist to crack the glass. Normally a shop wouldn't replace a TV in this sort of situation since it wasn't cracked when removed from the box.

The Samsungs are thin and fragile, and i think they even have a plastic rear cabinet so they probably twist easily when improperly handled or transported. It doesn't take much deflection to crack a huge slab of uber-thin glass.

This is weird... no cracks out of the box and yet when you hang it, it cracked?? Where was the crack if you could let us know? Sounds surreal....

For what its worth:

Anytime you get a plasma do the flash light test,,, with the plasma off go over every inch of the screen with a flash light and pay extra close attention around the edges of the glass.

Using a flash light will make even the smallest hairline cracks show up,,,, simply looking at a screen in good lighting does not do near as good as the flash light method of checking a new'ly delivered/purchased plasma.

+1 I learned this the hard way...
I had a PN58C6400 delivered yesterday from Amazon, and it arrived badly cracked. Fortunately, the delivery company was obligated to inspect the TV before I accepted it. These TVs are so thin, I'm wondering if they're more susceptible to cracking when moving them. I'm leaning toward a Panasonic 58" S2 now since I don't care at all how thick the set is and it's quite a bit cheaper.
Even though it's prolly not anything to do with Samsung, well maybe a bit with the thin design, I think we're going to go Panasonic...TC-P58S2...just feeling a little gun shy with Samsung...that's 0-2 with that particular model....the Panasonic is almost 20 lbs heavier....I'm gonna need a new wall mount me thinks...

Probably really 0-1; while laying a plasma flat works sometimes, it is a no-no, and like Randy said probably caused it to crack.
Eeek.. This thread is scaring me (after the fact). I just bought a floor modeal PN58C6400 from Costco for $1600. Great price, but we had to lay it flat in the back of my SUV to get it home (without any packaging).

Looks fine now in place, but I didn't realize what a chance I was taking. As long as no cracks develop overnight, I guess I'll just consider myself lucky.
I don't know why you think overnight is enough of a time period?

There could be internal damage to the TV, so, one needs to test it thoroughly; even that is not a guarantee, as with any TV, no matter how it was delivered.

I've decided to postpone doing the initial setup until I have a good hd cable box setup down in the basement. But of course I will run through everything at that time. Internal damage, while possible, is much less of a concern (likelihood) than damage to the glass. A little temperature cycling is all I need to feel relatively safe.

At any rate, I've got a rock solid return policy and a great price for now.

Just an fyi...I've been watching the price on the 6400 at my local Costco and I guess they are now on closeout. Price yesterday was $1499.97. Might be worth your while to take your receipt back to Costco and see if they will refund you the difference (+ any tax), as they do have a price adjustment policy. Caveat: some stores won't honor the adjustment if they don't have the item in stock.

Thanks a ton for the heads up. I went back to my Costco on Friday and begged and pleaded to no avail because my Cost o was now sold out There was one display model of my TV at another store about an hour away. If it was a sure thing I would have done it. But there was a good chance that Costco could sell out too before I got there and I had a lot to do this weekend. I'm afraid I couldn't get the lower price.
