I've just finished inspecting this pj on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1349667811

. Minutes later, someone bought it using buy-it-now feature.

Ok, here is the rest of the story. I made an appointment to check this projector with the intention to buy right away if there was at least one

crt tube that could be used. This seller kept parroting what a nice picture

this pj can display. The place was a computer outlet store. I took a flashlight with me and inspected the crt faces through the lenses.

There were two dark heavy bands of burn-in in all three crts. Although the

burns were located at the top and at the bottom, there were also some

burns in between (not as severe). I also inspected the second one they have, the crts were in the same shape. I told the seller that this pj's are

only good for parts or for crt tech who can rebuild them.

He then commented that someone offered him $800 for both pj's and now

he is starting to regret it. Now you know the rest of the story...

I saw those and was considering them to upgrade to a 9500LC, but not being an 8500LC they were not what I wanted. I wondered about the seller and how good their info was on the condition of the CRT's.

To the seller credit, he just lowered the buy-it-now price for the second pj by $100 and limit the sale to local pick up only. Actually the seller honesty was never in doubt by me. However I (we?) always have a tendency to believe that those crt projectors sold by unknoledgeable seller have 'perfect' crt tubes.

It says:

"CRT HOURS: CRT On-10638,STD BY-0, Total Hours On-10638

Picture looks Great...."

10 thousand hours and the picture looks great:confused:

It must have been give tender lovin' care:D

Or perhaps the picture from another dimension, beyond that which is known to man...Next stop...The burn-in Zone!!

My 1252 had nearly 9k hes on the chassie when I picked it up, but the tubes looked fine. Tore it apart and they still looked great. It throws an excellent picture. It has one small blemish, but for $300 I was not going to complain. I know I'm probably missing out on perfection, but it's good enough.

So it may very well through a good enough image for him, but as we all know that most of this croud has a different idea of what a "good picture" looks like.

I offered him the $800. for both pj's because he sent me the hours before he relisted them. I TOLD him they would be burned to a crisp with that many hours on them, and that they would only be parts machines. I KNEW from the hours they were burned to a crisp(former institutional pj's with that many hours are definitely going to be burned), but obviously there's some people out there with more money than brains. Why don't they ever want to buy my junk?

*

* Do you remember the guy who advertised his NEC 6PG Extra with the SEVERELY burned tubes as being "normal wear". I was in contact with him too, and the only reason he had a picture of the tubefaces was that he was advertising the tubes as "no burn" and I was going to buy the two pj's he had, but he wouldn't "guarantee" his "no burn" assertion. When he wouldn't guarantee that, I convinced him to remove the lenses, when he did, the burn was blatant, yet he STILL sold one for $1000.! I can't believe the people out there.

what am I missing on this thread, for a grand and the cost of 3 new tubes it is a nice PJ. How much are the tubes anyway for this one. If VDC builds them would be around $1,500 for new tubes.

Scott, that is a good point and the reason I traded for a XG85 with 4500 hours. I figure that even if I have to replace the tubes for $2000, I'm still getting a better projector than spending that amount + what my old projector would get ($800 or so) on a new projector.

Thats a $1,000 for the PJ, $100-$250 to ship, $4000 for the tubes, add the price to install and calibrate them, all of a sudden it turns into a very expensive project, if you have the time to do it.

There are better deals out there.

I looked at the Projector Specs Web site and you can get these rebuilt. So it would be

Projector $1,000

Shipping $ 200

3 Tubes $1,500

Tech time $ 400

total $3,100

And the projector maybe able to keep a red tube which would bring the tube cost downd ot $1,000 and tech time to $300 wich would keep the cost at $2,500

And that is for a projector with 3 perfect tubes. Of course you need to find a good tech. I did the same kind of purchase for a Barco 1208 and luckly had Terry Ferentinos help me repair it. It is a Risky way to purchase a projector, but not the Wrong way to go. Yes the project should have been sold for a little less, but we are talking maybe a couple hundred bucks

The point I'm making is how many of us would want to do that, I might, you and some others. But there is alot of work involved

To the sellers credit, he emailed me about 8 pics of a projected image. You could tell easily, even with the very low res, that the tubes were burnt to a crisp. He in no way tried to hide that fact.

Let me add a couple of points to this thread. First, I would have purchased this projector for $1020 if it wasn't for the fact that the red tube was burnt very bad too. In fact , I even told the seller that it must have been displaying white scrolling characters to have three tube faces equally burnt.

I have a spare Marquee 8110 with much better crts than this that I was looking to have two tubes replaced but opted to look for a Marquee 8500 with one or two worn tubes because it costs about $2K to replace two with

rebuilt tubes (excluding tax). $400 for labor? I will gladly pay double that

figure for labor to have someone replace and calibrate three crt tubes.

deron,

that is true, i guess what i am saying is the title of the thread - eBay newbie casualty - may not be accurate. if it was sold as mint for around 3 grand, yes it would have been a rip off. In this case the buyer got around what he/she paid for

The reason I started this thread with this heading is because I have just

'educated' the seller on crt tube condition and there was no way the buyer

would have known it before. Yes, you can 'band-aid' the damage by replacing the tubes with rebuilt ones but it is most likely this is not what the buyer expect. Had the buyer have several feedbacks specially with crt projector purchase, I would have not started this thread.
