Another (how would YOU hook this up?) Thread

OK, I have all of the components in place, and the theater build is going along pretty well, so it's time to nail down the cabling I need to hook everything up. Here is the list of what I have, along with my first thought on how to connect everything - what do you think? Do you see a better way of doing it?

(BTW, I'm still on the fence as to whether to use the audio amp for switching video)

All of the components will be in a rack together, so cable run between them will be less than 5' - the run from the rack to the projector is about 25'.

My first thought is:

DVD Player

HDMI to Projector, Coax audio to amp

DVR

Component to Projector, Optical audio to amp

PS2

Video to Projector, L/R audio to amp

Amp

Video out to projector (so that I could plug a digital camera or something into the 4th A/V input located on front of amp)

whacha think?

The dvd doesn't have an optical out? If so connect that to the optical on the receiver for the audio. And the hdmi straight to the tv. When you switch to "CD" you should see whatever dvd you're playing.

Connect the coax audio from the dvr to the receiver.

The ps2 should be connected straight to the receiver I guess...

As for the projector, connect the component to the dvr.

I don't know for sure.. a little confused and tired.
The DVD does have optical out.

It looks like you just recommend swapping the audio feed types between the DVD and the DVR...
Run the HDMI from the dvd to the projector so you can use the upconvert if it has one. Then run everything you can component into the receiver and another component out to the projector, that way you only have 2 wires to the projector and it doesn't look like a big cluster ****, and you don't need 4 25' wires. As far as the audio, digital coax or optical, doesn't matter.

I've got the same setup as you and that's how I did it, everything works fine.
It is an upconverting DVD Player - I didn't realize it needed to run through HDMI to get the benefits of upconverting - thanks for the tip!

I guess I really answered my own question by taking the time to type all of this out. I've just got to get some cables ordered now!

Is that actually true? I know that most DVD players do it that way but what does cable type have to do with whether the DVD player can upconvert or not? What's so magic about HDMI that can't be accomplished through a component cable?

What am I missing?
Not really sure, just know that the couple I looked at only upscaled through HDMI.

I have asked in another thread, but I'll ask here too - how much of an improvement is there in upscaling? My display device is a 720res DLP Projector (Mits HD1000u).

Here is what I have come up with for a wiring diagram, with the associated cost of cabling from monoprice.

$59.90 - This allows HDMI for upscaling, and limited AV Rx switching.

- or -

$36.03 - This loses HDMI for upscaling, but does let the AV Rx do almost all of the switching.

So - is upscaling to my projector worth $23.87, plus doing more manual input switching on the projector? (I'm not overly concerned with switching audio and video sources seperately)

This does not count about $40 worth of speaker wire... so the cable cost is a concern - but not at the overall cost of image quality.
