Anthem AVM30 question aobut 7.1

311 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ekb
Hi folks,

I have my unit set to 7 channels, and it appears the only surround mode using all 7 channels is THX Surround EX (while watching a movie). Is this correct, or do I need to check my menu? I'd think there are more surround modes that would be all 7.1 channels without having to choose THX Surround EX.

also, what's everyone's favorite surround mode for movies (5.1 + PL II, DTS Neo 6, etc)?

Thx all,

Eric

PL IIx will give you 7.1 and is the only mode on the AVM30 that gives stereo rears (ie THX is mono rears). Also I think there is Anthem Logic that will give 7.1 but also mono rears. If you can't get PL IIx, then you may need to download the latest firmware and install.

Hi,

I do have PL IIx, thank you for confirming. Just to confirm, I'm talking about a discrete digital signal, ie., Dolby Digital or other while watching a DVD movie. Do I only have THX EX and PLIIx to choose from for a discrete signal? I am just surprised if I can only get a 7.1 signal while watching a movie if I choose IIx. But, it is what it is...

I just thought if I chose 7 speakers in the menu system, it would create the additional 2 channels of surround information regardless of what "mode" I had it in.

So, DD Discrete + the PLIIx processing is then 7.1?

thx much!

PLIIx will create 7.1 from either two channel stereo, 5.1, or 6.1 audio tracks. With a 5.1 and a 6.1 source it will use the respective side surround info for the rears.

I don't know about your Anthem, but my Yamaha will also play 7 channel stereo from a two channel stereo source. This is designed to be used with music.

Here is a link to some good info on PLIIX. http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...ix-3-2004.html

You do realize that there are no 7.1 discrete sources?

There is the plain vanailla DD EX 6.1 (ie w/o THX). But most will recommend PL IIx to get the stereo rears. Also if the source is stereo (ie 2 channel) then I recommend PL IIx Music (vs PL IIx Movie or Game) and playing with the 3 parameters (width, panorama and "I forget the 3rd") to fill out the sourrounds.

Just to add to the above post, only DTS-ES Discrete has 6.1 discrete channels. DD-EX and DTS-ES Matrix are 5.1 discrete with a single mono rear channel that is matrix encoded.
