Any Advice on Tosh 34HFX84 vs. JVC AV-34WP84

421 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mkreef
I'm about ready to pull the trigger on one of these two as refurbs. Hoping someone can steer me towards one or the other. The JVC looks to be a better unit overall but the price is also a sizeable jump, 800 vs. 1300 and for all the info I can find, I don't see any listing of the JVC having any HDMI inputs vs. 2 on the Tosh. So if the JVC is actually superior is it worth 60% more?

Just to nip the "Just get the Sony" and the " look at the 32"/37" flat panels" comments in the bud, I have a 38" wide space and these are the only two models (the newer Orion/Toshiba models excluded) that will fit in the cabinet and I'm waiting for the flat panels' pictures to come closer to good old CRTs before I consider that price level for a TV.

Any help appreciated.

Probably the Toshiba, in this case.

Just make sure you're well covered on warranty and support, given that these are refurbs you are dealing with.

The JVC does not have HDMI. It IS a better overall set, with no digital connections.

So you need to weigh how important the digital connections are to you vs. an overall better quality product in the JVC.

Toshiba would be my choice. This set has two HDMI inputs and thus offers greater flexibility to add devices using this input in the future. That, plus the price differential would steer me in that direction. Picture quality on these sets made at the New Jersey plant by Toshiba is terrific. Agree with the extended warranty advice also.
Thanks for the advice, I was leaning towards the Toshiba for those same reasons. It's good to get some confirmation that I'm thinking clearly. Now I just hope I can find one, on further review both online refurb retailers showing the model have notes I hadn't noticed showing this model to be a "Wait List" item and calling them confirmed that they really don't know when they might get more.

This was my problem back in October. I called a few different places that still listed the 34HFX84 refurb and no one had any and didn't know when they would get any. (One site still says 2-3 weeks, but it's been like that for over 2 months).

So I gave up and got the 34HF85.
