Any chance of using the Toshiba player as a cheapo generic compute PC?

Beowulf anyone??? I know there seems to be some issues with it, but for $500, could it? would it?

I think so. However, I am not going to do anything to it until the warranty ends and toshiba has announced (or just doesn't) release any SW upgrades.
You could buy a better computer for $500, I hear the CPU is only a 2.2GHZ Pentium 4.

How powerful of a CPU is required to do only a couple of tasks, like playing HD-DVDs? Computers that run Windows have so many services running in the background, it can't compared.


With the the HD-XA1/A1/D1 software can be downloaded to fix issues, add new features, improve decoders, etc... With fixed hardware units can do only minor fixes if that; upgrading requires a unit replacement. How many people bought in a device only find out the chip in the device has a flaw and you have to live with it or replace it?
