I am interest in getting a device for my HTPC that will allow me to record from either HDMI or component inputs. The only thing I have found that allows me to do this is this device:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815106017

Is there any cheaper card out there that will do this? If not, is there any card out there that will record SD but from component inputs? The only cards I have found only have S-video (yuck).

Thanks

HDCP isn't a concern because I plan on capturing from my PS3 (games, not bluray). For the HD-PVR, how much do those run and who sells them? Also is that thing all internalized? Meaning it automatically does the recording and encoding for you? If that's the case, I don't think that solution would work for me because I also want to record SD resolutions at its native resolution.

$249 direct from Hauppauge (there is a buy now button in the link I posted).

$205 currently from NewEgg.

All recording is done at native resolution. It encodes to H.264 on the fly. Games are not a good idea with it because there will be a slight delay. You will find that this is pretty much the case with just about any capture device. I don't know about the one you posted though.

As for HDCP, it will be an concern for you:

The Xbox 360 does not use HDCP for games, but my video processor confirms that the PS3 does.

The Hauppauge has video pass-through via component, you don't need a switch. There is a 1 second difference going to the PC over USB and doesn't affect the pass-through. You can still watch TV or whatever with the unit off also.

So OK don't keep us in suspense. WHAT WILL work to record HD from cable/sat? Or is this another copyright protection conspiracy?

There is nothing that will capture HDCP protected content via HDMI. As I said in my next sentence and DJWikeria reiterated, you can use the HDPVR for component output.

Capturing from PS3 is critical. I would like to output to my TV via HDMI while capturing with component. What is the best way to set this up?

As noted the Hauppauge will work. I do not own a PS3 so don't know if it has a component out to the TV (prob do). If yes. Connect the component out from the PS3 (?) to the Hauppauge HD PVR component in and then use the HD PVR's pass component out to the TV. If there is no delay then just used the Hauppage's pass thru to the TV and if not then get a switch (Gefen and such). The cap'ing to the PC will be delayed but no probm since the TV is not delayed when your are playing. Then edit the PC caps after your finish.

Also with component, you avoid DRM and HDCP in most cases for now.

I don't know about the PS3, most devices de-activate component when HDMI output is used. Component and HDMI have the same picture quality, just a different way of getting it there.

Lucky my cable company's SA8300HD DVR supports both component and HDMI out at the same time
