Any difference in audio quality for PC CD/DVD players?

I'm using a regular Sony 18X Dual Layer DVD+-RW in my home theatre PC. Is there any potential upgrade here to improve sound quality? I'm using an X-Meridian sound card with analog output.

Not really, it's all a buffered digital stream regardless, with timing issues governed by the host PC. The only real difference between models would be their capabilities with damaged discs.
Yes, particulary if you modify it;

This card also does ASIO so if you plan to play a lot of music CD's you might want to get a player like J.R Media Center that will take advantage of the ASIO for superior sound.

EDIT: nevermind thought you were talking about the sound card, there is no real difference in players like arfster said.

As long as you are NOT using the analog out on the drive - all you need is the IDE cable and power, that way you are using the DAC in the X-Meridian and not the crappy one in the drive.

Other than that, well, we could start a 200+ page thread on jitter that would never go anywhere...bottom line is if you're concerned about it, then rip everything to HDD using FLAC or other lossless codec for CDs; if you've got the space, do the same for your DVDs. I did it, but for convenience and functionality more than any real concern about jitter.
