Any fix for Gamertag linked to "dormant" email address issue yet?

I have the problem outlined at the link below.

http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/...gamertags.aspx

This is the issue where gamertags continue to work on the Xbox 360 console (game demo downloads, purchases, etc.), but you can't log in online or upgrade to a gold account. My original Windows Live ID went dormant because I didn't log in online every few months (but I did continue to use my Xbox 360).

There is a comment saying that Microsoft is working on a fix. Does anyone know if this is really in the works? I have tried contacting Xbox support, but I get the standard canned answers of getting rid of my existing gamertag and creating a new one.

Thanks...

* 9/3/09 Update - This problem now seems to be resolved. The latest update to NXE allows for an updated link to a new Windows Live ID.

Hey now, maybe that's what's wrong with my son's account. Except he has a Gold account from the original xbox days, linked to my credit card, and it auto-renews each year. But I can't link it to xbox.com, update the email address from within the console, or enter 12+1 card codes or Points card codes.

But Xbox Live online works just fine, and they bill me and send me emails about the billing just fine.

I've spent 2+ hours on the phone with support a couple of times without it getting resolved. Flush the cache, go to the computer and not do anything, get bumped to the next support level../repeat/repeat/repeat/"we'll have engineering (not) call you". The time and frustration level isn't worth the $10 or $20 I can save on the renewal.
This happened to one of my son's Silver gamertag, we couldn't upgrade it to gold. Couple frustrating rounds with support then we gave up and created a new Gold gamertag.

Mindblowing that this could be possible for a company like msft.

If I do that, the abandoned Gold account will still renew...
According to THIS THREAD this issued is being addressed in the next dashboard update....the relevant info is towards the bottom of the OP.

"Updates for Invalid Windows Live IDs - If the Windows Live ID you provided has expired, you will now be prompted to update it the next time you sign into Xbox LIVE."

Great! I have my fingers crossed that this will actually work.
Just a quick bump to confirm that the latest NXE update to the Xbox finally resolved the problem of expired / dormant Windows Live ID's linked to gamertags. I tried unsuccessfully to change my Windows Live ID through the dashboard right after the new version was downloaded. It didn't work at first and it gave me an error message saying that I was not connected to Xbox Live (even though I was to get the update). Later, however, when I ran an actual game and changed the profile to my local Gamertag, I was prompted to change the Live ID associated with my account as the old one had expired. I typed in the details of my new Windows Live ID and everything was accepted. My scores and points all transferred correctly.

Now, I can finally sign up for Xbox Live Gold without losing my existing Gamertag. It took a long time for Microsoft to fix this, but I am glad that they kept at it.

I was also able to do this. Got my son's WindowsLive link updated to a new one so now I can renew him with discount Xbox Live cards.
