Any good 4k av receivers under $700?

Hi all,
I’m looking to buy a good 7.1 or 7.2 4k av receiver under $700

I bought and returned Yamaha tsr 700 from Costco.

The HDMI switching on the tsr 700 was terrible. I had multiple inputs (Roku, PS4, xfiinty flex) into the receiver, and the output to my projector - but switching inputs was a nightmare. Sometimes it would take 5 mins (yes, mins not seconds) for the switching and many times, it would not switch at all.
So I’m back to using my trusty 15 old 7.1 1080p Yamaha receiver which works like a champ. Only I can’t get 4k from Roku or Flex, and can’t get Dolby atmos from my old Yamaha.

I’ve read that most (if not all) 4k receivers suffer from this malady of HDMI switching due to some bad chips made in Taiwan.

Any recommendations of some mid range av receivers (under $700) that actually work?

get a non hdmi 2.1 receiver. I have a Denon s750H after returning the TSR-700 and don't have any HDMI switching problems. The s950H would work too.

I just got a 8K TV so are there any 8K receivers around the same price ? I will be hooking up a Playstation 5 . Thanks
not yet, you'll have to wait for the faulty HDMI 2.1 chips to get replaced first.

Denon that sold at Costco
Any idea when the 2.1 chips will be replaced and when the new receivers will hit the market?
Also, any comments on the onkyo TX NR 595 going for $399 at Costco?
@Arules99 Pioneer, Onkyo and Aventage are coming this summer/fall.

onkyo nr595 like most Onkyo's have a ton of features for the price, but has mixed reviews on Amazon so do your homework. No hdmi 2.1 issues to deal with so probably a good place holder until they get 2.1 kinks ironed out in 2022.

Otherwise the Denon s750 seems to get a lot of good reviews.

Marantz can give you a high quality receiver in that range. Esp if you look at refurb. Check Accessories for Less

Thanks @eriksells916.
I’ve have had an excellent experience with my old Yamaha. But was heartbroken with the TSR 700.
If the new Yamaha Aventage is expected in the summer/fall, then I would rather wait for it.
Any idea which retailers would be selling them - I’m assuming amazon for sure.

What projector do you have? HDMI cables are the most likely suspect in HDMI handshake nightmares', especially if they are over 15' in length. I assume you are aware of this and are using known good HDMI 600mhz certified cables as it's possible the AVR isn't actually at fault. It could even be the projector.
If you can up your budget a bit to the Denon x3700h you can get a top tier measured AVR with 11 channel processing for right at $1K if you shop around. It’s pretty much a no compromise AVR. There is a free HDMI box to get it to work properly with 2.1.

I’ve got an Cinemax P2 projector.
Using good HDMI cables and the run is less than 6 ft from AVR to projector.

2.1 issue fixing box. Tell me more about what this is....

Every single AVR on the market right now with HDMI 2.1 has a shortcoming that wasn’t originally expected. They will not work with the 120Hz, VRR, HDR offered by Xbox Series X or Gaming PC natively, and as a workaround you must use E-ARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) which bypasses the receivers AV switching - but has limitations (like it won’t pass DTS-X atmospheric audio codec). The free HDMI 2.1 adapter box is for customers who need that functionality of HDMI 2.1 switching built into their AVR. Read the audioholics link I posted. Only Denon and Marantz have the fix right now for their units in this free optional HDMI box. Yamaha doesn’t have a fix and Pioneer and Onkyo has to delay their 2.1 AVRs so they could await corrected chips. Next generation, 2022, should have the HDMI 2.1 port fixed internally for all.
@Arules99 its called an spk-618 HERE
Thanks. I wonder if I just got a bad unit (Yamaha TSR 700 from Costco)
I had the issue when switching from input source like Roku ultra (4k/60hz), Flex (4k/60hz) and PS4 (1080p). No Xbox or 8k signals involved in my setup.
🤔🤔
@Arules99 The tsr-700 is also on the list, I believe it too has the same faulty panasonic chip set. However Yamaha is going to offer a free hdmi board update since this issue cannot be solved via firmware. No idea on timeframe though.

Thanks @eriksells916
I’ve returned the TSR 700. I’ve reverted back to using my old Yamaha RX - V567.
7.1 HD receiver - more than 12 years old - no 4k or Atmos. But it switches like a boss.
@Arules99 thats why I still have my 2002 Integra avr and amps running daily. Optical is far superior to hdmi :) ....but I realize I have to join the 21st century so I started with an iphone 11 this year and am now all wired for 7.2.4 atmos. A new receiver is next!
