come on...nobody here have a standalone hdtv recorder? so all u sucka are paying $10+/month for a tivo/cable like subscription to use a hdtv recorder?
so why did sony and lg discontinue their model? cuz time warner and cablevision and tivo pay them off so they can rent their stuff out for $10/month to some of the avs folks here?
I don't think the demand was there. LG and Sony discontinued there models because they didn't make money. I have heard Sony lost a fortune on theirs. I have the Sony unit and for what I paid for it, I could have rented a Comcast box for almost six years. The TV Guide software is awful anyways. I don't know if it is like this in most areas, but half the time I don't have any program information for certain channels (sometimes more than half the channels), and for some reason they made it where you can't "name" a recording so you end up with hours of "unknown" or "no listing" recordings. It is a real pain.

DVICO makes a media streamer (TVIX) with an add on ATSC tuner. Just came out and beta testers are helping work the bugs out. Looks promising though. It records full HD. You add your own HDD to the box. No QAM support, just OTA though. No DVD drive, but a network connector :)

Well, two years ago after this "sucka" started getting tired of the inherent flaws in his LG3410A, he began using a Mac to record OTA and QAM, and liked it so much he never looked back.

This is a very savvy comment and taken alone is probably enough to explain why there isn't more HD DVR choice: what average consumer wouldn't choose the $10 per month box rental fee (with no long term commitment and which could be swapped out or upgraded anytime) versus a comparatively huge upfront hardware cost, poor warranty and poor customer service? It's not like the LG and Sony standalone DVRs had substantially better guide info or GUI--they didn't--and the Sony didn't even have firewire, just in case you (shame on you) wanted to move something off its hard drive and archive it.

A 500GB hard drive dedicated to high def and two OTA/QAM tuners for the Mac would come in under $500--of course, that assumes you already have the Mac. And this is about your upfront cost for a Series 3 Tivo, but then there's the monthly service fee to factor in. So no matter how you try to get around this, it's going to cost you.

That's why, even for many AVS forum regulars, the $10/mo STB rental fee looks pretty good--especially if you get a box with an active firewire port...

...Limited to only the Motorola DVR platform. No Scientific Atlanta 8300's have active, working firewire any longer (they still have the ports, however firewire has been disabled at the software level) that will successfully interface with the only device ever approved for that function, the D-VHS tape deck.
f this...i think i can built a hdtv recorder pc then...since we wont see any hdtv standalone recorder until 2009 since evertyhing will move to digital.

Do you have a Fry's Electronics anywhere near you? Some people have still been finding the Sony DHG-HDD250 HD DVR on their shelves, which is usually marked down to around $500.00. Otherwise, check ebay for it. I can't guarantee what the price will be there, though. Probably higher.

Even then there may not be a market for a stand alone HD recorder. Building an HTPC would cost a lot more than your $500 target and the guide sux. Your expectations are too high given your low budget.

Can't you pony up $600 for a Tivo Series 3 and get the 3-year prepaid subscription which comes out to $8.31 per month?

My local Fry's (Manhattan Beach California) had the 250 and another version with a bigger HD for $500 and i think $600 a few weeks ago. The sales guy said they have several but weren't getting much interest. A co-worker of mine might want to get one to record OTA but he hates Sony products and their unreliability.
