I'm about to buy both and wanted to know if anyone has issues that would change my mind (about either)?

I am/was also considering the sony 46" XBR2 1080p set, but it's too wide for my space (not to mention all of the cloudy screen issues people raised). Also, I considered the Sharp Aquos 1080p 46", but it got such a bad review from cnet on color.

Maybe I should just stick with my old Mitsu tube....Crap!

I'm definatley suffering from over-analysis.

I bought the Sammy 40" 768p, but it has one issue I didn't read about and don't know if its the sammy or all LCDs.

When switching from 16:9 to 4:3 and back, you can see blotches in the screen for a split second. I did some A/b'ing last night and memorized the image to see if it was a trace image, and it was.

It seems that it takes 1/2 to 1 second for the light and processing to catch up. I was hoping that this is not on all sammys or at least not on all LCDs. If there were 1080p in the same price that didn't have this issue, I would consider them.

I just picked up the Sammy 4695D yesterday and I'm very happy with it. I watched King Kong last night on my 360 HD-DVD player going through the VGA input at 1080p and it was stunning. I also checked out several videos and games with my PS3 going through the HDMI connection and again everything was stunning. Just watched the Illusionist this morning and going through my 360 its up converted and again looked stunning. Watched some Conan last night on NBC and it was very nice. Starting to sound like a broken record but everything I've checked out looks incredible. Very impressed with this tv.

Sure, I'll be glad to give you MPO. The "only" reason I wouldn't buy the Sammy 4695 is that distractive, high gloss black frame. I've just never understood why a manufacturer would make a such an awesome non-glare LCD screen, then surround it with pure gloss ? Where's the logic ?

Other than that, it's a great set with great PQ. Of course so is my JVC LT 46FN97..... and it is all "flat black" :)

Peace,

I first bought a 40xbr2 when it was only $1999 at bestbuy, I returned it for a sharp Aquos 46" and then returned that for a Samsung 4695d, I am by far happiest with the Samsung. slight cloudiness, but I turned power save onto medium to lower backlight, and it is hardly noticeable. It looks amazing with blue ray, and as soon as I get the HD-dvd player for my xbox360 i'm sure that will look awesome too.

I've never once found the finish the least bit distracting while watching the set, but I have noticed how great it looks when the set is off. Maybe it depends on your room.

But more importantly, the frame is about as small as you're likely to get, and as narrow as you're likely to get (with the speakers at the bottom). Less is better.

Also, a swiveling stand was a must for me.

The issues are:

- no 1:1 over HDMI; as a PC monitor, you need to use VGA or use a video card that fits inside the overscan

- won't stretch/zoom digital sources. so a broadcast that's letterboxed on all 4 sides wastes some real estate. not a big deal to me, but it would be nice if it didn't work that way.

Given that the perfect set doesn't exist yet, a good choice if you can live with those.

Buzzy,

I think I'm going with the Sammy. One thing about my current Sammy 40" is that I can't figure out how to stretch the 4:3 non-HD content I get from Dish. You said it doesn't stretch digital feeds. Can you please explain that more?

I can use the Dish remote to stretch the feed, but then it screws up the HD feeds too somehow. Also, Dish allows grey bars which alleviate some of the blotching, but then the HD is compressed into 4:3. Weird.

But I didn't see a smart stretch that allows all shows to fill the screen.

Also my current Sammy lacks a lit remote, which drives my nuts since most of my watching is when my wife falls asleep - so I'll have to get a universal remote - not that big of a deal, but I think all remotes should have a light.
