Maybe this is posted somewhere in this forum, but I don't wanna waste several minutes looking for it. Is there any recorder out there that will let me set the recording as 16:9 instead of 4:3? My purpose for this is that I plan to buy a DVD recorder soon basically to record HD boradcasts using an ATSC tuner, and in the tuner I can select to output the image in 4:3 or 16:9. Since my TV set doesn't easily allow me to set 16:9 (I can only do it through the service menu, which is a hassle to do several times a day), I would like to set the ATSC tuner to output real 16:9, and if the DVD recorder can set the ratio flag (or whatever is called) to 16:9, then I when I play the recording it will still have the bars but the image quality will be better since it captured the whole frame rather than just part of it. It's not a matter of life or death, but it would be nice to have.
Also, anybody has any experience with the new Philips recorder that is hitting the shelves now, the 3390? Seems nice for the money.
Pioneer models can preserve the widescreen "ratio" flag if it is provided by the source device (i.e., your HD tuner). But, the Pioneers will not let you specify the flag yourself.
A few HDTV tuners output the widescreen flag, but many don't.
There are limitations with widescreen flag setting on the Sony units mentioned above, such as the total length of the recording (
