I am seriously considering the upgrade to a HD DLP unit from my ED unit, and was wondering if the 1280x720 in the SP7205 HD2+ is as good as it is going to get in the DLP camp for now?

I thought that TI demonstrated or alluded to a bigger DMD being released this year...

Thanks!

Thanks Art, I thought that somebody was showing off one of these units! I'll bet that the ticket price is fairly steep! ;)

I checked out your HT setup BTW, very nice!

As I slowly digest all of these threads, a single question comes to mind:

Why doesn't TI just make a true 1920x1080 mirror array? It would appear to be the simplest solution....

Trying to sell 2048x1080 D-cinema to replace 35mm might be more difficult if they start putting the same chip in consumer devices.

They have a couple of problems

1. single chip 2048x1080 might be so good that they would not sell any three chip dlp of lower resolution.

2 Selling three chip dlp 2048x1080 for the upper home theater market might lower the status of D-cinema.

My hope is that coming 4k and 8k cinema PJs will render these issues moot quickly, freeing true 1920 (or 2048) x 1080 chips for the home...

The thing is that TI repeatedly says 2k is excellent and there is no need for 4k.

That is 4k is of no use until TI can provide 4k which might take some time.

On the other hand the lcos gang are fighting to get those lumens on screen.

I saw the 2k DLP PJ at the Zeigfeld in Manhattan showing Van Helsing (an absolutely horrific film - my wife and I left 20 minutes into it) and the picture quality was outstanding. Blacks could've been better, but they were no worse than the average film presentation IMO.

Mattias I see what you're saying - I just think/hope that TI will have to sing a different tune once competition forces them to! :)

That's exactly what a TI rep told me about 720 vs 1080 about two years ago - "no need for 1080". That's what we call "downplaying the need for something we don't have yet"

You can either a) get HD2+ now or b) wait and see what happens at CES in January. But a 1080 projector wouldn't be available til summer at best and wouldn't be less than $20K, I'm sure. For a single chip.

I don't know that TI is even close to have 4K or 8K cinema projectors. They'd have to use the same pixel doubling the HD3 and xHD3 use to achieve it and even then a modified cinema 2K chip system would cost a lot -- assuming it'd even work.

I think the current crop of 3 Chip DLP's are DOA! Considering the price point they start at and the price of higher resolution projectors that are out there now. I give it a couple more years before a 25K 1080 single chip DLP chip pops its lens into our home theaters.

"Who said anything about TI?"

This thread is about DLP. TI has a monopoly on DLP as you know. I was merely adding to the discussion that I don't think TI has anything in the pipeline to compete in the 4K chip market as a follow up to your comments.

Right. And I'm saying that competition will (hopefully) force TI's hand in the d-cinema market which in turn would have implications for their actions in the home market. That's all.

Tony,

JVC has had twice the resolution than DLP for what 4-5 years now?

Who's VASTLY outselling whom in FP HT?

There are things other than resolution to consider here.

Obviously we have the other metrics we talk about all the time here: on-off CR, luminous efficiency, ANSI CR, picture uniformity, etc. etc. etc.

D-Cinema also asks for VERY high reliability, stability over time, temperature, humidity, etc. etc. DLP has a proven track record in all this and all the other competitors still need to prove themselves.

It's not as simple as having 2k and 4k chips...
