Any suggestions on in-ceiling speakers for Home Theater?

1694 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  monkmonk
I am in the process of piecing together my home theater and am looking for recommendations on what brand in-ceiling speakers would be best to get. I will be using these almost exclusively for TV and movies. My only criteria are:

1) I need five 6.5" speakers. Three in front (L,R and center) and two surrounds in back.

2) I believe an adjustable tweeter would be ideal.

3) I would like to spend under $500 total.

From my own research a few of the brands I have found are:

Jamo 6.5CS

MAS Audio MAS-IC6

Home Theater Direct HD-R65

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments on the quality of various in-ceiling speakers.

You would be best served not using ceiling speakers for anything more than background music. At the very least, go with small on-walls.

You should be OK with in-ceiling for the surrounds, but most people won't be happy with in-ceiling for the LCR. On-walls at least for the LCR would be recommended if the speakers must be "hidden".
Thank you both for your input. I think I will end up taking your advice and go with wall speakers for the LCR. From the other forums I've seen recommendations for the Velodyne front row and BIC H-100 subwoofer. I'll probably give that a shot and put in-ceilings in for my rear speakers.

And on what expertise do you make this recommendation?

Take a look into Niles & Speakercraft for in-ceiling speakers in your budget.
I'm guessing you don't have any issues with in-ceiling speakers for a Home Theater set-up? I'm new to Home Theater group and would prefer in-ceiling due to my room layout, but don't want to go that route if the sound is going to be noticeably worse. I am in no means an audiophile, so I most likely would not notice a small difference in sound quality. I just haven't been able to find much opinion on this topic until I posted.
