Any universal players with HDMI 1.2 or higher?

I'm in the market for a new universal player, and I was wondering if there are any which support HDMI 1.2 or higher so they can output SACD over HDMI? I know that the PS3 can do this, but the fan seems to be rather noisy--I'd rather use a quieter component for my music listening.

The PS3 does have HDMI 1.3, but actually converts SACD output to PCM, HDMI 1.1-style. It appears the hardware doesn't have any DSD data paths. The Oppo players also do this.

There aren't yet any players available that output native DSD over HDMI 1.2.

There have been some hints that the Marantz DV7001, expected out in the next month or two, may have HDMI 1.2, and hence presumably DSD output. The latest Marantz receivers (SR7001 and SR8001) have HDMI DSD input.
Even though the Marantz DV7001 isn't out yet, I found a product page on a UK company website. They do claim "Direct DSD path for best SACD performance". The HDMI version number, and many other specs, aren't listed, take the information on this page "with a grain of salt".

edited: the website referenced before went away, so I would be compelled to swallow the entire salt shaker
, but fortunately Marantz Europe posted some information about this model, as noticed by poster below. In the Product Information Sheet (see link), only the video capabilities of the HDMI output are discussed, not a word is written (yet) about any audio format over HDMI.

Marantz has released a "product information sheet" on the DV7001 and it expressly states the player features HDMI 1.2. You can download the brochure by logging in to the European part of the Marantz site and then homing in to DVD players.

However, the brochure doesn't expressly mention the player's capability of handling SACD audio via HDMI. What is does state is this:

"SACD is based upon the DSD conversion principle that links excellent specifications like a frequency range of 100 Khz and a dynamic range of 120 dB to superb sound quality."

Not quite sure what that means...

The Marantz DV7001 has HDMI 1.1.

The brochure text seems to be in error, the input/output tabel on the last page mentioned HDMI version 1.1, which seems to be correct.

Really? What are you basing this on, other than the last page of the brochure? At present, I can find precious little info on this player...

Try google with this search:

"phileweb.com_ news_ d-av_ 200701_ 25_ 17651" --> change the _ in /

(sorry for the crazy way, but I was not allowed to post a link).

Take the first link it finds and look at that page for the picture of the backsite (click to enlarge) and read what is says next to the HDMI input.

I found the link; VanO is correct about "HDMI 1.1" showing in the image of the back panel of the Marantz 7001.

That looks like a worthy site, but unfortunately for most of us, its Japanese language, with English translations of only a few features. (I bet there's a lot of interesting recent web content on consumer electronics that never gets translated to English.)

Thanks, guys.

That dampens my spiriits somewhat, I must say! It would seem to be so easy for the likes of Marantz, Denon, Yamaha et al. to release players with HDMI 1.2 (or higher), but it just isn't happening, is it?

Ah, well.
The Oppo Digital Players can output SACD via HDMI by converting the audio to PCM first...

The 970HD supports the new HDMI v1.1 specification, so DVD Audio's high-resolution multi-channel PCM sound can be output digitally via HDMI. This is also the only player I'm aware of that allows SACD's DSD sound format to be converted to high-resolution PCM (88.1kHz/24bit) and transmitted via HDMI as well! End users should be aware that your receivers or surround processors need to be HDMI v1.1 compliant as well to use this feature.

The link only mentions the Opo 970HD, but I'm thinking this will hold true for the DV-981HD too, right?

Are there any other players that can do this?
Any updates on any 1.2 players?!
The problem with HDMI 1.2 based DVD players is that they need a HDMI 1.2a receiver which will actually accept SACD DSD through HDMI. To my knowledge, there are only four receivers which do HDMI DSD:

Marantz SR7001

Marantz SR8001

Yamaha RX-V1700

Yamaha RX-V2700

You may be under the mistaken impression that HDMI 1.2 guarantees output of native DSD over HDMI. That is absolutely not the case.

The HDMI 1.2 transmitter can support native DSD output, but only if the player actually has the firmware (software) to make that possible.

I do that all the time, come back later and see the typo...

In any case, I would expect most of the DVD players introduced after April/May to incorporate HDMI 1.2, but I would expect very few of them to actually pass DSD over HDMI.

This is absolutely correct. Hopefully, a universal player and reciever or pre/pro will come out this year that will support native DSD via HDMI.

I've got another question for you guys. Other than the Oppo 970, are there any other players that can convert DSD into PCM and output it via coax, optical or HDMI? Thanks.
^^^ Somebody already mentioned the PS3.

Thanks, Larry.

Oh, I just watched Idiocracy the other day and laughed my ass off! Definitely another soon-to-be cult classic.
