Any way to transfer shows from PC to replay...

627 Views 18 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  rm -rf *.*
I'm planning on doing a single drive HD upgrade on my 5040 later this week, and was wondering if there was any way to transfer the shows back to the new replay drive? I can't burn them off to a DVD (I currently do not have a DVD burner). Thanks.

You can transfer the shows to DVArchive and then stream them back to the ReplayTV.

or

Let RTVPatch copy the mpeg partition to the new drive. That preserves all your currently recorded shows.
was there ever a version of dvarchive that supported IVS? There has got to be someone out there that has created support for IVS from a pc. I mean, the RTV50xx is still sold today with the support, so it's not like we're looking for more features than the market already allows. It would be terrific if we could create videos on our pc and ivs them to a 50xx machine ;)

A program called DVArchive will allow you to move the shows to your computer's harddrive. With DVArchive on your computer your Replaytv will see your computer as just another replaytv and let you stream shows from your computer to the replaytv (after the fresh install).

DVA is free

It wasn't IVS.. the shows were not transfered into the replaytvs, they were transfered from computer to computer. the Replaytvs would just stream the shows from a computer.

it was sorta like DVA and kazaa under one unified GUI interface

The program was called DVswap (or was it SwapDV). There were legal troubles and it is no longer functional. The charge was, get this, 'subversion'.

..I edited my last post..reread it at will
rtvpatch should allow you to copy your shows to the new hard drive. there isn't a way to copy the shows from DVArchive back to your PC, but you can stream them back to your PC.

There is no IVS for DVArchive, and there are no plans to do this. The last person that made a DVArchive type program and included a way to transfer shows got sued, the author of DVArchive would rather not get sued too.
Welcome to the department of redundancy department.

Hey, I didn't think that discription was going to do it for a newbie with 15 posts who had to ask in the first place so I spelt it out a bit more.

djdementia should be stapled to a fence and shot though

j/k dj

bleh :p

everyone else answered it too, but to a newbie i thought their answers were somewhat cryptic. I thought I'd post a straitforward easy to read answer.

besides with no new information from DNNA, post count on this forum is dwindling, what else is there to talk about? :)

Doesn't seem to even slow down the bovine contingent :D
Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I think that I'm going to try to use the RTVPatch to copy the shows over, but in the Single-Drive upgrade instructions, it does not recommend that shows be copied to the new HD. Why would this be the case?

I don't know. bayside may or may not know, l8er isn't here, JeffD thinks he knows and is probably right but also isn't here. If j.m. knows he's definately correct.

EDIT: You might want to contact former frequenting member 'heathriel' on toot's board, she's pprrtty and I bet she knows.
That's a very old warning. In the beginning, long before the cow was enlightened, there were concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of the procedure. As it turned out, the fears did not really come to pass and the procedure has been successfully carried out countless times. And, while there still may be a possibility of it failing, you still have the original disk and can try it again or pursue other methods. I think that I am unanimous in stating that. ;)

Yes, unanimous in all except for the "long before the cow was enlightened" part... :p
That's great to hear. Now, my next question is, how do I do it. After reading the installation manual for the single drive upgrade, it asks "Do you want to reset the MPEG partition". It says to answer "yes". Do I still answer yes? Will I have to do anything extra such as going into windows explorer and physically copying the files over? Thanks again.
After step 16 to copy the system partition, you want to copy the mpeg partition, then go to step 17. At the Patch Target Drive part, you want to answer no to "Reset mpeg partition?".

Please note that copying the mpeg partition will take a considerable amount of time and is not dependent on how many or how few shows there are recorded, it copies the whole partition regardless.
Gary's not kiddig when he says "considerable amount of time" either.

I did this once with a 40Gb drive and it took like 10-something hours.
