I'm not a fabric or craft expert, but usually when speaking of a "yard" or "by the yard" its a running yard of material by its natural width. In the case of GOM its a piece 3' (yard) by its width of about 66".
the linear yard (36") is correct - the width of 66" is also correct - when you are used to 54" home dec fabric, this is great because you effectively have more fabric per yard.
