How can I check with my Onkyo 607 receiver? I'll watch a VUDU flick with the free $6 credit right now to see as I wait for UPS to drop off my GT5 copy.

Can anyone even tell the difference between DD and DD+?

I mean, the difference between DD and a well mastered TrueHD track is noticable (sometimes) but the difference between DD and DD+ is just marketing and receiver lights lighting up imo.

The bitrate of dd+ can be much higher than dd. I have no idea what the audio bitrate is on vudu. But typically when an advanced dolby codec is transcoded to dd, it will be at the max dd bitrate which is 640 kbps.

That's why I'm wondering what exactly is going on. I don't think anyone has confirmed they've been able to get DD+ over Netflix or Vudu on the PS3 yet.

When HD DVD was around, Dolby Digital Plus bitrate was up to 1.5Mbps on a DD+ capable sound receiver. DD max bitrate is 640Kbps.

I have DD+ 5.1 working with Netflix.

Too bad not all the HD offerings have it though.

But it works great. Netflix steaming is solid as well. No hiccups.

With the Vudu HDX Free Previews I am only getting 2-channel PCM.

I know the trailers are in stereo but the Previews are supposed to be the first two minutes of the actual movie. So I should be getting 5.1 and I'm not.

I have not tried buying an HDX movie as of yet.

I think there is something wrong with the Vudu App.

I will wait for a fix before purchasing any movies.

Netflix has a setting for 5.1 audio.

I have not found any setting for it in Vudu.

Anyone else not getting 5.1 audio with the new Vudu App on PS3?

I know the technical merits separating them. I'm just saying, for something like a Netflix stream, where the whole (video/audio) is coming in at low single digit Mbps data rates, do you really think you are getting full size, 1.5 Mbps DD+?

Anyway, I stand by my comment. Does anyone really think they will hear a difference between DD and DD+? I can't say as I would be able to when I watch shows.

I can't seem to get DD+ working even though I know my receiver supports it. Eddie, do you have the "DD+" symbol lit on your receiver? If so, what is your audio config on the PS3?

I have my PS3 connected to Onkyo 705 receiver via HDMI.

All PS3 audio settings are currently set to bitstream.

I know it works because I get 5.1 audio when streaming Netflix HD movies that have 5.1 audio. Onkyo lights up DD 5.1.

With Vudu no matter what I try I get 2-channel PCM audio.

The Free Peview Vudu HDX clips should have DD 5.1 and all I get is stereo.

Try some of the HDX Free Previews and let me know what you get.

Thanks.

I just got off the phone with Vudu Support.

I was told by the tech that the trailers and most of the HDX previews are not encoded in DD 5.1 and that if I purchase the HDX rental 5.1 will work.

The CS rep spoke to someone while I was on the phone.

The tech she spoke to said he tried it last night on his PS3 and 5.1 was working when he purchased the movie and not for the trailers and prviews.

So I will give it try tonight as I have some credit coming.

Have you purchase an HDX movie and tried it yet Dave?

Eddie- I am getting a plain DD 640k output on Netflix, just not DD+, that's why I'm asking if your receiver specifically says "DD+" on it (mine has that designation when playing a DD+ file). So unless your receiver specifically says DD+ then it appears you're only getting standard DD output like I am.

As far as Vudu goes, no I haven't purchased a film yet- but the HDX "freeviews" (first 2mins of each movie) are supposed to be identical to the whole movie, and these also show on my receiver as standard DD 640k output, no DD+ (PS3 Display shows them as being DD+).

The only thing I can conclude is DD+ output on the PS3 is broken in some way, and no one has DD+ output as of yet.

FYI: If you want 5.1 bitstreamed output off the PS3, try removing 7.1 support in the audio output menu, once I do this Vudu stops output PCM and switches to DD.

He just explained that the VUDU people said those quick previews are 2.0 audio only. You'll have to test using an actual movie rental. Why not use your free credits and check?

I tried it and still am getting plain DD 640k.

What do you mean by Plain DD?

2.0, 5.1, Dolby Digital what?

When playing HDX Free Previews my receiver says I'm getting,

"Multichannel PCM 7.1"?

When I stream Netflix HD movies it says,

"Dolby Digital 5.1"

Dave thanks a lot.

I tried just what you said here. I went into PS3 Audio setting and removed all instances of 7.1 audio selections.

I launched Vudu and tried another HDX preview and you were right.

My reveiver now gets Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

I wonder why 7.1 PCM was being output before??

You were right though disable 7.1 and it forces DD 5.1 output.

Thanks again.

Plain DD= 640k DD 5.1. What we should be getting is DD+, which is E-AC3 (enhanced AC3), an extension of standard DD. If your receiver supports TrueHD then it most certainly supports DD+.

Unsure why DD+ isn't working, but from this thread, and other threads on this forum and around the net it appears no one can get DD+ bitstreaming working on their PS3 and both the Netflix and Vudu apps. Didn't they test these apps before putting them out?
