Anyone know any rumours of DLP makers scrapping Side Speakers?

678 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  abward
I am looking for a DLP set in January. I have 43" wide to work with. It appears my only options are:

Samsung 63 or 74 series 46"

LG 44"

RCA 44" (rumored to be released soon).

Every other 40-something inch set has freakin' speakers on the side making the TV huge. Has anyone heard any rumours of manufacturers releasing new designs in the coming months without side speakers that I should keep my eye on?

At this point, I'm not a big fan of the LG or RCA models (currently available). So I'm 90% leaning towards the Sammy (hopefully 74 series if it ever comes out. Would love to consider a Toshiba or Mitsi if they would dump the elephant ears.

Thanks,

Mike

Mits DLPs do not have side speakers, but also don't come in the size you need.

JVC HD-ILA?
Those side speakers are actually where they should be on a TV of a premium caliber. When you complain of side speakers you display an involuntary assumption that all people have surround(or other) sound options. While this presents your appreciation and understanding of AV it might not be the norm for the majority of people. Even at this price point. Stereo speakers of any arrangement must be separated to present stereo sound. As a person who owns $11,000 worth of stereo equipment and awaits a HLP5685 I feel the pain of what you as a purist are feeling. But at the same time, when I lay down this kind of money and want to hear stereo sound from the TV speakers--------at the very least they better be separated on both sides of the TV. Not stuffed underneath for aesthetics...

My opinion only---but something to think about...
be nice if they made them removable. Then everyone can be happy!
Bravo!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe the next generation..

In other words, people need their new tv to act just like their old one. I never turn on my audio system to watch CNN, so am grateful for the speakers on the set.

You care about stereo when you are watching CNN?
Toshiba will be releasing a 44" set w/o side speakers, but it will only be sold by a select few retailers.
i had the exact same problem. i ended up going with the sammy 43" model as i had less space than you to work with. fwiw, i never use the speakers on the tv. so if cnn ever goes 5.1, i'm ready.
There is also an LG/Zenith RP LCD set that is 40" wide. It is sold at BB.

I am in a similar boat: I have 40.8" to squeeze a set into.
Abward,

Sounds like you need the rumoured Samsung 4674 that is supposedly hitting the market in November. If I remember correctly, it is only 40.5" with a 46" screen.

Caltvdude,

If you have any links or articles that mention anything about this 44" Toshiba without side speakers I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks everyone!

Yea, side speakers are a big problem for me. I had just about picked the Toshiba DLP over the JVC D-ILA when my wife started harping on how we are gonna have these giant speakers that we will never use, while on the JVC we can actually get rid of our center channel speaker and use the TV one. Their picture quality is comparable so I think the dumb speakers have killed the deal for me. Making the TV larger for no reason decreases WAF, at least by my observations.

Yes, thanks, I am aware of that one. It is 40.6"; a nice fit in my 40.8" space :)

I had been waiting on that one since the summer, until I started to get worried about all the moving parts inside, and the price. The LG/Zenith is about $1500 less, and does not have spinning wheels and milliions of moving mirrors.
