No idea.. you may want to read the users manual cover to cover and see if there are any functions that are remote only. My Mitsubishi HC3000 requires the remote to open and close the iris.. if that was not true, I would not have needed to buy one. NOTE: I got mine from Mitsubishi for much less than the other sites that claimed to sell it, so check with sharp.
The menu on my DT-500 is similar to the point of probably being identical to the DT-510.
I try to touch the PJ as little as possible & use the remote for everything. There are a few things like keystone and trapezoidal adjustment that would be difficult if not impossible without the remote -- the same might be true for setting the iris but I'm not sure.
Most everything else is simply easier; things like switching from one input to another or using the different mode presets (movie/dynamic/etc.) when switchingh from one type of viewing to another (sports to a sci-fi movie).
