I have an $2000 "pit" couch that I would love to use but it is light green. I need black. I have seen "decorating shows" that painted or stained a couch. Has anyone done this? How did it turn out? Does paint rub off?

Have you thought about a slipcover? It would probably have to be custom made.

My thoughts on paint is that it could stiffen the fabric. I have painted on fabric before, but not furniture.

Hope someone else has a better answer than me!

Don't do it!! I've experimented with 'paint on' fabric dyes and have never been satisfied with the results - uneven color saturation, stiffening of the fabric, etc. If you can remove the fabric (for example, a slipcover) and dye it in a sink with Ritt liquid dye and salt you can get good results - otherwise, forget it!
