After 4 plus years of enjoyment from my 4805 i believe it is on its last legs. I had preordered the pj before it came out and still love this pj. I had fixed the light tunnel problem about four months ago and cleaned out dust blobs throughout the years. The past 4 months I have been running the bulb in high power mode(which for the pjs life it ran in low) and I believe the increased heat has now caused my color wheel to fall apart. I have glued the color wheel back together and plan on reassembling tonight. The light tunnel fix glue has charred creating the side of screen shadow so i took off old glue and reglued. If it works it will be running back in low mode, if not i will be looking for a new pj. The two I have been looking at are the Infocus x10 and the Epson 720. I was wondering if the x10s blacks are as good as the 4805 being a darkchip1 as opposed to a dark chip2, also placement of the x10 could be an issue. My 4805 sits mounted high in my 7' basement ceiling and my 96"screen top sits 8" from ceiling. The Epson seems flexible for mounting and the free bulb is a nice bonus but have always preferred dlp over lcd, granted i haven't seen lcd models since i bought the 4805. Are there other current dlp models with the same mounting specs as the 4805 in the >$1500 range? All input will be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I went from the 4805 to the X10, and at the X10's default settings, the blacks on the 4805 were slightly better. But no worries, as the X10 is a serious light cannon, and even slightly dropping the IRIS down brings it to 4805 black levels. With SD material, the change in quality was minimal. The screendoor effect seemed slightly less. Brighter image of course. Note while I purchased my 4805 in 2004, the bulb in it is only about 6 months old. But any HD source will have the X10 running circles around the lowly 480p spec'd 4805.

thanks, I got the pj all back together and it is running again. I still have a slight shadow on right side, ithink it is because when i reglued the light cannon it is not perfectly shaped. I can live with it until I decide to buy a new pj. Then this will become a camping and vacaton pj.

I am going to hold out and see how the Vivitek $999 1080p gets reviewed.

When I glued the color wheel I was sloppy with crazy glue, I even had my finger stuck to the one section. When it dried it turned to a white haze. Surprisingly it did not affect the color!

Now my son can finish watching Toy Story tonight and I can watch the Phils!

The X10 will definately be brighter and sharper when you have HD content.

A couple things to be awarwe of would be the the throw ratio and image offset.

Using InFocus' Projection Calculator I got the following numbers:

- Image Diagonal = 100"

- SP-4805 = 12'10" to 15'6"

- X10 = 13'6" to 16'2"

Due to the longer throw you may have to move your projector back to fill your screen.

The image offset on this model is 136% vs. 127.8%. So, you may have to slightly aim the projector up and use keystone correction to position the image or perhaps lower your screen.

Isn't the main benefit of going to the newer DarkChips to get a higher contrast ratio? With this said, the X10 still has a higher contrast ratio than the SP-4805. Is there anything other than the contrast ratio that needs to be taken into consideration when comparing DarkChips?

It's like colorwheel specs. It used to be "the more segments the better", but now they can get 6-7 segment performance out of 5-segment colorwheels.

Rather than basing a purchase on the DC number or on colorwheel segments you should go by the posted specs.
