Anyone seen Midway, the war movie on DVD? is it a decent transfer?

I saw this on tv over the weekend on one of the cable movie channels in bit and pieces. At times the film was grainy and not very good of course as its got all kinds of footage.

I was just curious, I am wondering if the dvd is better, I thought I might rent it from Netflix.

last time i watched it was on my old LT150, and the scaler in there wasn't that great.

however, like most Universal catalog titles, the transfer still looked very solid to me.

if you like the film, its an easy rec.

also, kudos to Uni for making it a 1.1 mix replicating the originals Sensuround effect.
As you stated, because of the numerous "live" shots used Midway will always have a bit of a hit or miss PQ. The DVD does better the TV broadcast, however. Plus, who wants to sit through that many commercials during a 3 hour movie? BTW I think the '"live" shots from WWII are what make this film so memorable, and more realistic.

Midway is the climax to the war in the pacific, everything that follows is declining action.

That, and the fact that all of the characters are real people, other than Charleton Heston's character (and presumably his son.)

thats why I only saw bits and pieces of it, the commercials were too distracting
I don't know about the DVD quality, but this is one of my fav. WWII movies. It is one of the few battle movies where I actually understood what the heck happened in the battle. Very well executed in that regard.

Some of the voiceovers in the original footage are hokey.
