I was just poking around a surplus electronics website ( http://www.mpja.com ) and found that they were selling some thermo electric cooling modules.

Apparently they have been used for CPU cooling at some point, as MJPA has one unit that is complete with a heat sink and is rigged up for installation on a PPC 601 processor. The docs say you can get a 70 degree C. difference btwn the sides with cooling down to 0 deg C with the right heat sink.

Has anyone tried this on a newer processor as an attempt to be able to alleviate fan noise?

Do not even consider running a Peltier (T.E.C) without some form of cooling. Heatsink or watercooling is preffered. Otherwise that T.E.C. can pump some serious heat and if there is nothing to take the heat away. Instant silicone goo. Most people that do run T.E.C.'s run a water cooling solution but unfortunatly for the heat exchanged that requieres fans so there goes the hush hush. =/
