Anyone using an Anthem D2 with a CRT?

381 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  audiman
Hello folks,

I am considering upgrading my Preamp/processor and Faroudja NR Scaler to an Anthem D2 preamp/processor and video scaler.

And I was wondering if anyone here has successful used the Anthem D2 with their CRT Front projector?

Thanks, BK

I heard there are some CRT's that can take a component video input, but is this inferior to the RGBHV option?

Thanks, BK
Component is equivalent to RGBHV. Neither is superior. Ultimately RGBHV is always derived from YUV at some point in the chain, and the choice betweeen them usually comes down to what equipment has the better transcoder.

CRTs are mostly very accomodatling about what they are fed, compared with fixed pixel displays, so a D2 should be fine with most PJs.

What have you got, and what are the specifics of your interface?

You may want to read what I wrote in the thread below before considering the D2 for use with a CRT. Basically like any AV amp it won't upscale copyright (most dvd's) material beyond 480p/576p on an analogue output.

I bought a Yamaha Z9 for this purpose but found out the hard way afterwards. The 5805 Denon is the same. It's even crazier on the Yamaha though as at least the Denon can upscale to it's HDMI output like the Anthem, the Yamaha doesn't even have a digital video output so it's upscaling function is useless about 95% of the time.

Of course if you have a HDMI input on your CRT projector you can circumvent this issue by using that.

What I think is rude is none of these AV manufacturers state this plainly for all to see. They wait until you buy the product so you can read it in the instruction manual. This was a very large part of the decision for me to buy the Z9 (which I love anyway), and I basically gave up on that functionality as soon as I found out that it wasn't capable of anything beyond doubling with anything actually worth watching.

Well that is unfortunate that the Anthem D2, might have problems upconverting copyrighted material up to 1080P. So I am assuming that my dvd collection which is copyrighted, falls under this category.

And people has said that the HDMI cards fitted for CRT's is not the best. They say those cards don't work the smoothest, and that it is fighting with the CRT projectors.

I am not sure if this is accurate, so if anyone has input please do.

Or else I might have to consider looking to upgrading to a Digital projector again :(.

Thanks, BK

This is a side nitpick, but Component video is distinct from RGB, and in fact inferior. However, as all the sources we are dealing with are encoded in component video, that loss has already occurred, so you are correct in characterizing Component and RGB transmission as being equal in this instance when dealing with all content that is native Component video. However in actuality Component and RGB forms are distinct and Component is actually inferior. However, in trade, component allows for chroma subsampling which leads to beneficial data reductions that cannot be done in the RGB domain. Anyway, maybe someone finds that relevant, or perhaps I'm just talking to myself as usual! :)
You could use a transcoder (component to VGA)

I have the dtrovision DVI to VGA external box and i do have some ringing and crushed whites, but i have to redo the grayscale.
