Anyone using Mac mini with VP50?

968 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bluechunks
I am getting ready to add a htpc to my system and I think that I want to go with a mac mini and connect that via dvi-hdmi to my VP50 which is connected to the JVC RS1. I am curious of the quality of picture you can get from a mac mini? I know that the older Apple DVD players where not very good but the newer version with Leopard is suppose to be better. I am currently using a Denon 3910 with an sdi mod for dvd play back. Will I be abel to get the same quality from the mac mini?

I have both the Mac Mini (1.66 Core Duo/2GB) and the VP50. Although I have not used them together, I can confirm that the DVD player in Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard) is vastly improved compared to OSX 10.4 (Tiger).

One of my favorite real-world de-interlacing torture tests the Family Guy episode, " Blue Harvest ,' which is a complete parody of Star Wars available on DVD. It is 480i animation and will very quickly expose any de-interlacing issues. Using the Mac DVD player in 10.5 with the 'De-interlacing' set to 'Optimal Quality' the result is very good.

The Mac Mini will output video via DVI-to-HDMI all the way to 1080p (I have tested this) so it would appear the the issue with integrating the Mac with the VP50 would entail some real-world testing to see if you prefer the de-interlacing and scaling of the Mac, the VP50, or some combination.

I have not tested this, but some reports suggest that the Mac Mini cannot output interlaced video, which may be an issue easily overcome with the VP50's PREP feature if you prefer the VP50's de-interlacing. In any event, I suspect that it will be difficult to improve upon a SDI modded DVD player, so your trial-and-error testing will invlove an attempt to get as close as possible to what you have now.

Good luck!

i am in the same boat and thinking of dropping xp with all the codecs, ffdshow, etc. and get a mini and use front row for ease of installation and waf. my denon 2930 dvd player (reon) still beats sd upconversion from dvd compared to playing a perfect rip on my pc and running it through the best codecs. if the mini can output a 480i signal or a scaler can improve the signal i will jump in.

speters, what mini are you running and is its speed enough for sd rips as well as bd rips? what format rips are you using?
As an update to my earlier post, the Mac Mini will output interlaced signals. If one desires a custom resolution that is available but not being advertised automatically by the display or video processor's EDID , one can use the shareware software SwitchResX . This software allows one full control of all the 'hidden' video output modes as well as 100% control of custom resolutions. 10 day free trial.

This is probably obvious or redundant, but just in case, there is also an active Mac HTPC section of AVS.
