Is it ok to have your surround speakers from a different manufacturer than the front channels?

I was thinking of having either Atoms or Titans as Mains with a matching Paradigm Center channel, probably CC-170 and maybe having the JBL Northridge E10s as surrounds.

Would this be a bad idea? I have heard the E10's make decent surrounds, and aesthetically they would fit very well into the room since they are relatively flat.

Wouldn't it be ok as long as the front channels timbre match and the surrounds match each other?

Let me know your opinions either way.

Thanks,

Yung

As you mentioned, theoretically, you won't get an exact tonal match and some will say this is very very bad. I say, if your ears tell you panning between the different brands is seamless, then there is no problem. It really depends on how strict you want to be.

Personally, I've got mismatched front/back speakers in my setup and I am extremely happy.

Why don't you just stick with Paradigms for the surrounds? ADP-170 dipole speakers are not very imposing in size and mount flat to the wall.

Rynberg,

That's what I will probably end up doing, but just wanted feedback on this alternative. Its also $89 vs. about $409, no small amount of change.

Also, I was wondering if you are watching a movie using THX, doesn't THX compensate for the tonal differences between the front and surrounds by its timbre matching feature?

Atoms are relatively inexpensive and small just get another pair for surrounds.

Timbre matching corrects the difference in sound that is heard from behind the listening position versus the sound coming from the front.

A certain sound coming from in front of you sounds different than the same sound coming from behind you.

It's not supposed to make JBL's sound like Paradigms or whatever.

It would have to be a really smart algorithm if it had to detect which speakers are in front and then make the rear speakers sound the same :D
