The aspect ratio can vary 16:9 and 4:3.

I am asking about the fill factor, how much of the display emitts light and how much is there in between.

It varies a lot on plasmas, I think. Some are supposedly in the 30-40% range and some -- I think are in the 50s ad 60s. LCD is less variable in fill factor and is probably in the 60s.

In practice, this matters little, though, due to invisibility of pixel grid on HD plasmas at >2 meters even for "eagle eyes" and same on ED/SD plasmas usually before 3 meters.

No. It seems like the spots -- phosphor triplets -- are very small, but there is a great deal of space, too, from the shadow mask or aperture grille.

You could try asking in the projector forum where obsession about fill factor is pretty high.
