Hello ATV owners.

Apologies if this is a basic question but I'm not sure I can wade through over 600 pages of posts.....

I am looking for a streaming device to play my BD and DVD ripped content (no 4K content at the moment) and futureproof the likely deprecation of the 'smart' functions of my TV so the device needs to be able run Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, WWE Network and Stan.

The latest ATV, the 4K, looks like it will do this just fine and is very reasonably priced, here in Australia, compared to the Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 and, more importantly, is actually available to buy.

Given the above requirements, are there any reasons why I shouldn't buy the ATV 4K?

TIA.

I think you’ll find most here do the things you want regularly (I’m not sure how Stan works on TV, though have heard it can be done), but personally I would wait to see what’s announced next week at the WWDC (especially State do the Platforms).

TV/projector calibration app

Hi guys

I've just released an updated version of my little calibration app for Apple TV which now shows patterns in 4K:
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/4k-test-patterns/id1518092883?ls=1

It lets you do a basic calibration of screen geometry, sharpness, brightness and contrast. There's also a pattern showing whether you've reached the point where resolution vs. screen size surpasses your visual acuity.

Any other patterns you would like to see included?

P.S. The older app for 1080p is available at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hd-test-patterns/id1225888213

Will this one work on every ATV4K device in the home or do you need to buy for each device?

When you buy an iOS app from the App Store, you can use it on as many devices as you want without having to pay a second time as long as all of your devices are logged in to the same Apple ID.

Just got your new app...like it very much! Maybe add the SMPTE pattern if possible? That’s the one I’m most familiar from my old Radiology monitor calibration days...of course they were grayscale ;-)

Thanks. Not sure if the SMPTE pattern is public domain but a similar pattern with the same functionality should work. How would you use it?

Good point! I would use it mainly for brightness and contract with the 5% & 95% boxes and well as screen uniformity and sharpness. Again this is only because we used this exclusively in my field and had to submit documentation per screen to the Physics department for compliance that each met the 5% & 95% guidelines.

Anything similar would be fine to be honest. Also, I do like the brightness & contrast test you have incorporated. Very effect and easy to use. Great app...thanks!

I didn't have the old version. Does the new version work on 1080p as well? Or does it require a 4K display? I'm still on 1080p right now but planning to move to 4K later this year. I currently have everything running through one input on my TV via my AVR, but I wouldn't mind setting up a second profile on that input for the ATV to tweak cal for it as well.

All the things you can do with an iPhone with the Apple TV, will the same work on an iPod touch? I've no need for a phone but there are several uses with other devices it would be nice to have app control.
While I haven’t tested this, the app is the app. If it runs on the touch it should work. I assume it’s the Remote app?

Yes, the remote. But also other stuff you can do from iphone to apple TV.

Actually it is unclear if the control center access and keyboard notification features work on the touch. This feature we’ve determined is built in and does not need an app installed. Someone with a touch should verify.

It does however work on an iPad which does not have cell phone SIM support so it is likely to work on a touch if running iOS13.

Thanks @markus767 for the links, Quick question, can I just use the remote and ATV then? Sorry for the noob question, but figured I would ask. Thanks! I guess I could just download tonight and find out myself when I get home from work....

The app runs on the Apple TV and shows test patterns and some help text how to use them. You navigate the app with the ATV remote.

I just loaded it as well. Nice layout. I agree that adding some test patterns would be a nice feature. 10 step grey scale and the primary/secondary colors would be great.

Check this thread for publicly available patterns:

The app should help the user to get picture settings into the ballpark without any meter. While some patterns might be helpful for spotting problematic areas they will also only serve the purpose of frustrating the user. They soon enough come here, buy a meter and calibration software :)
