I am building a media center pc to store all 700+ dvds I have. I would like to be able to rip all my dvd's to the media centers 1.5 TB hard drive but I am having trouble finding the right program to achieve my goal. I have a 42" 1080P plasma tv and would like to rip the dvd's while maintaining 5.1 dolby digital sound and maintain the dvd video quality while maintaining a relatively small file size. Please help me with what the best program, burn specs and file type is best.

You could use DVD Shrink to rip an ISO from the DVD, but it's going to be 4 gig per dvd if you want to maintain DVD quality. The good thing about this is that it's fast (5-10 mins per rip) and free. I know there are other programs out there that can compress the dvd to 1 gig, but compression takes a long time. Long as in hours. You could try Divx Author 1.5 if you want to compress to divx file.

Also, you can save the cost of building a media center pc and buy a wdtv or popcorn hour to play your files. Then use the savings on buying more hard drive space.
Thank you for the information. I forgot to mention while I am trying to scrape together the funds to build my media center I want to get a start in copying over my dvds but I only have access to a mac. Would you know of the best mac software that can quickly convert over?

MacTheRipper and Handbrake

MacTheRipper first to decrypt the dvd to your hard drive. Then Handbrake to put it in the format you want. Good luck.
