Are Canadian Blu Rays the same quality as the American versions?

1678 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  rboster
I ordered several blu rays from inetvideo.com and when I received them I noticed that the front cover were in both English and French. I have yet to test them but I was wondering, are they the same encode as the american versions?

I recently picked up Twilight, and Kill Bill 1 and 2. I was wondering why they were so inexpensive. I've read that these Blu Rays from Alliance don't come with many extras that the American version has which isn't a big deal to me. I just want to know if the quality is the same or not. Thanks for the help!!

yeah, we even have electricity up here... it's a fun thing...

But seriously, folks, you're obviously not asking about -all- Canadian exclusive discs, but a subset (in this case, Alliance releases). There's a long story here, but the short version is that while in the states Disney releases Miramax titles, up here Alliance/Atlantis had the video rights. We've had a few of these releases, and most of them aren't particularly amazing, as they're using older transfers (Alliance isn't shelling out for a whole new transfer). So, while these are no doubt the same HD masters used to make DVD, their quality may not be up to modern compression standards.

So, yeah, buyer beware on a -title by title- basis. This, of course, isn't unique to our fair country, and if you're lucky, you might find a film that you love that looks pretty damn good, if not as perfect as it can be, on a Candian import disc...

Are there any good sites that do any type of comparison? I've looked all over and can't find any.
The Canadian release of Sin City has inferior compression quality compared to the US release. Also a few titles have not been in their OAR.
right...but, again, missing the fact that the "Canadian" Sin City was released before the Disney Home Video version (on a related note, we can't actually -buy- the preferred version).

On DVD, there were lots of times we had releases that were -better- than US counterparts.

As it stands, the US version on BD is rarely inferior to Canadian (or any other national release), so that's probably the one for you to aim for first. If it's a film that you like and it's not out in the US yet, beware that a US release is probably inevitable. However, if you -can't- wait, well, some are better than others...

As per the OAR comment above, some of them were basically HD Television masters, formatted to 16:9 (rather than, say, 2.35:1).

As for reviews/comparisons, check the usual sources (DVDBeaver, the Google) and/or ask about specific titles. There's no blanket "Canadian releases suck", it simply doesn't hold true and ignores the reasons that some of these releases are sub par.

Oh, and there's already a thread about them in this very forum...

Like Blade. Mind you the PQ wasn't bad.

Well, we can buy it in about half an hour (as I'm posting this late Monday).

On July 14, the "Sin City Premium Edition" will be released in Canada.

I just saw that in my BlockBuster newsletter. $24.99 is their price. I still have the first release still sealed up just in case this came out
