are CRT guns replaceable?

335 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  pittdog1
I have a really old 4:3 Mitsu RPTV. It needed to be recalibrated and refocused 5 years ago. (ok it isn't mine, it's my parents as I'd never let this happen...) To replace the set in it's entirety would cost over $2k. Are the guns themselves replaceable? The brightness and contrast is failing so it isn't like it just needs a calibration.

It would cost money to get the set taken apart and serviced anyway, so while it's open can they swap out the meat? Or does such an option not even exist let alone the cost.

It can be done but is most likely not a cost effective solution for your scenario. Buy a new set.
You should try removing the screen & cleaning the guns. I had an old hitachi, I took off the screen and cleaned the 10 years of smoke & dust and cleaned the inside of the screen & mirror( make sure it is not a 1st surface mirror) and it made a huge difference

I agree that replacing the set probably makes more sense. But , if they don't want to part with the bucks right now, doing what J420 says makes sense. I did this exact same thing about 6 mos. ago on my in-laws' 52" LXI

(Sears) rptv, and it brought out a lot of PQ in their set. It was amazing how dirty it was inside. It even had some cobwebs draping across the middle between the mirror and the screen.
